The following is the text of the interview with Sen. Tim Thine, Demontam of Virginia, threatened to “face the nation with Margaret Brennan” on November 30, 2025.
Nancy Threads: Welcome back to face the nation. We are joined by Virginia Democratic Senator Tim Kaine. Senator, thank you very much for being with us.
Senator Tim Kaine: Absolutely, Nancy.
Nancy Wires: I want to ask you about the situation in Venezuela, because now there are major military demonstrations, including international action, which may be imminent. He has twice tried to pass War Power resolutions that would force President Trump to get approval from Congress first before any military action. Twice, he failed. Do you think the numbers in this will change if there is world action, and will it matter at that time?
Sen. Kaine: I believe the numbers will change. You are right, I agree with the others, I submit a solution, there is no war in Venezuela or about Venezuela without the permission of DRM. It failed, but that was before all of this was accepted by Venezuela, and before President Trump said the AirSpace shutdown needed to be closed. I will go with my colleague, Senator Schumer, Senator Paul, Senator Schiff, immediately there must be military action. And then the second time, I also tried to stop Jehovah, which I consider to be an illegal boat in the Caribbean and the Pacific and Adam Schiff, and the situation has changed in the months. In all of these cases, we were able to get two Republicans to vote and one Democrat. We think about the increasing speed and other recent revelations, so, for example, the revelation that just happened about this murder of everyone organized by the Secretary of Hegseth. We believe that we will get more support for these speeches when they are rejected.
Nancy’s thread: He referred to this new article of the Washington Post that Hegseth Hegseth asked to be everyone in the cross, he was suspected of being killed when two people survived. The soldiers retreated, and the next strike was reported. What questions do you have for the Pentagon in that situation?
Sen. Kaine: First of all, first of all, if that report is true, it’s a clear violation of the laws of war, and international laws about how you treat people who are in the way of that situation. So this rises to the level of a war crime if true. And the questions we asked for months give us proof that the people on board were indeed narcotraffickers. In one event, there were two survivors, one corn, one Ecuadoran in a different strike. Instead of arresting and prosecuting them, the US took them back to their countries of origin. So if they are Narcotraffickers, why would we do that? We need more evidence for that. And we definitely need to be treated in the end and answer the question of why the strike rather than decide. If you know where the ships are, you can be sure. And when you do, you get proof. You find people. You can hide them to give evidence against their superiors. He finds evidence of drug taking. And finally, another question that my colleagues and I have been very concerned about is the entire legal framework. We had to go crowbar after weeks and weeks of management coming out. Legal studies on ropes in foreign waters, were very shoddy. Because it’s classified, I can’t tell you what’s in it. But I can tell you that it is not at all convincing that these are legal acts. And so along with a series of things, his retirement before the Chief of Staff, the news that the strikes were illegal, the decision of the likes of the Uk to stop sharing intelligence with the United States in this area because they believe that the strikes are illegal. It is time for Congress to reconfirm the President who decides to go to war with his voice, which is not allowed by the Constitution.
Nancy Threads: Many vendors on both sides have questions similar to the one you are raising. In a related letter, President Truec announced this weekend that he plans to pardon former President Juan Orlandoherenández, who is accused of smuggling tons of cocaine from Honduras to Honduras. Were you surprised by the President’s plan to pardon him, given how powerful the President is on drugs from other countries like Venezuela?
Sen. Kaine: This is surprising, and again, this is not a person accused of running drugs in the United States. He was convicted in federal court in the United States. One of the pieces of evidence was his statement that was taken by those close to the one who wanted to rip drugs from the nose of the gringos and grow the United States with more than 400 tons of cocaine. He was the leader of one of the largest criminal enterprises ever convicted by US courts, and less than a year into his sentence, President Trump pardons him, suggesting that President Trump does not care about narcotrafficking. Raising the possibility that the expulsion is now being sold by this white house. And if he doesn’t care about Narcotraffic, and this was shown again earlier this year with the Ross Ulbricht pardon, then what about Venezuela? The President of Colombia said that he thinks it is about the US trying to seize oil assets in Venezuela. I lived in Honduras for one year as a missionary way back there. Conspiracy theories are running rampant in America as to why this military effort is so important to the President when he pardons drug kingpins who operate in the United States. These are questions we will have to take seriously when we return to Washington tomorrow.
Nancy Wires: I want to ask you about some big developments in Washington this week. The Trump administration is making major changes after the fatal shooting of two members of the National Guard. They stopped all asylum decisions. They stopped Afghan immigration applications. The President says he wants a permanent moratorium on immigration from what he calls “third world countries,” we don’t know how many countries. Do they have a case that it makes sense to put some of these processes on hold while they figure out what happened here?
Sen. Kaine: You know, first of all, let’s just admit this sad fact, these two security guards, members, Ms. Beckstrom and MR. WOLLE, how beautiful they were and their families. And you know? They should have been at home celebrating, celebrating their families, not being sent on a political mission, law enforcement in DC, local law enforcement and other local law enforcement agencies. And this shows, but also, something that we have seen many times our forces, including our members of the guard, will light their leaders, but where there may be their intentions, and where there may be that the problem is studs. It should have been to celebrate thanksgiving with their families, and I just cry for them and all those who suffered because of it. The President’s decision that, okay, this criminal should be prosecuted to the full extent of the Asylum Act, that President Trueli and Asylum took action on past procedures, that now we will take action on past procedures, now that third countries “do not know which ones. You should not paint with a broad brush. Go after the criminal to the fullest extent of the law. But you can say that all the Afghans in the United States, those who work with our military and who have lost their lives and their lives and their families in many ways by doing so, don’t say that people from their third countries are bad. In Virginia, about one in nine of us is Furikint, and our communities in Virginia have been a great source of power in our Commonwealth and in our country.
Nancy Wires: Something tells me this is going to be a big topic of Congress- of Congressional discussion rather than, in Congress–
Sen. Kaine: – Will–
Nancy threads: – This week. Senator Kaine, thank you very much for being with us, and thank you.
Sen. Kaine: I’m so glad we can do it. Thank you.
Nancy threads: and we’ll go back.
