Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado makes an appearance in Oslo

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado appeared on Thursday for the first time in 11 months in Norway as her daughter accepted the Nobel Peace Prize prize for her prize.

Machado has been hiding since Jan. 9, when he was briefly arrested after joining supporters in Venezuela, Caracas. His recognition comes after mounting a peaceful challenge to Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro’s government.

The crowd chanted, “Freedom!” As Machado enters a hotel room in Oslo, Norway, and cuts to his supporters before joining them in the national anthem of Venezuela.

In an audio recording of the call published on the Nobel website, Machado said he would not be able to make it to Oslo in time for the prize ceremony, but that many people were “risking their lives” to get him there.

“I am very grateful to them, and this is a measure of what this recognition means to the people of Venezuela,” he said.

Her daughter, Ana Corina Sosa, accepted the Nobel Prize in her place, saying that her mother “wanted to live in a free Venezuela” and “will never stop for that purpose.”

“That’s why we all know, and I know, that he will return to Venezuela soon,” said Sosa.

Outside the hotel, Machado interacted with and waved goodbye to people in the crowd, as they snapped photos and showered him with chants of “President!”

“I want you all to go back to Venezuela,” said Machado.

Machado’s appearance came after Mongald Trump on Wednesday announced that the US had seized an oil tanker from Venezuela, a move that could further alter relations with Maduro’s government, which is already under threat from the destruction of the country’s economy.

Since September, US military strikes have targeted suspected narcotraffickers near Venezuela at least 22 times, killing 87 people. Trump recently said “Maduro’s days are numbered” and refused to rule the world in Venezuela.

Steve Yates, senior research fellow for China and National Security Policy at Gadi Talitage, said on “Fox News @ Night” on Wednesday that Machado’s visit overseas It was an opportunity to gain “international support” for his cause, adding that Trump would benefit from having more American allies in Europe who support the “non-aggression” approach.

Venezuela’s opposition leader has previously been open about his support for the Trump Administration’s actions against Maduro’s regime and the country’s Narcotrafficking network.

After the award was announced in October, the new Nobel Peace Prize Winner dedicated the award to Trump and “the suffering people of Venezuela.”
