US Tourist found dead in Tobago, suspect in police custody – nationally

Investigators in Trinidad and Tobago are investigating the alleged murder of a US tourist who was found stabbed to death on Wednesday.

The victim was identified as Christopher Brown, 43, a builder from Silverthorne, Colo.

Police were told that Brown had dinner and drinks with friends on Wednesday night in Castara, a small town in the Tobago region. He then left his friends, telling them he was going to buy marijuana, according to a police report, seen by the Associated Press.

Shortly after 10:30 pm local time, officials responded with a report that Brown was found unresponsive in the area. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe Brown was stabbed, and noted several wounds on his body and a metal object was found protruding from his back. Investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the murder.

“I can confirm that the suspect is in custody,” Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro told the Associated Press on Thursday, without sharing further details of the person arrested.

Authorities did not indicate whether Brown was visiting Thebago at the time of his death or while on the island.

Tobago’s division of tourism, culture, antiquities and transportation condemned the killing, saying it was the “first act of violence” in the fishing village.

“The separation of tourism, culture, antiquities and travel is very sad and deeply disturbed by the killing of foreign countries in the peaceful community of Castara,” the department said in a press release.

“This section strongly condemns this heinous act of violence and extends our condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the deceased at this difficult time.”

“We are devastated by this loss and condemn the disproportionate and senseless act. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and we stand firm in our commitment to all who visit our shores,” said Secretary Tashia Burris.

“This section is in close contact with the authorities and has already implemented protocols that respond to victims of abuse to provide the necessary support to the family,” the release added. “In the face of this deeply troubling incident, the division remains steadfast in its ongoing efforts to strengthen security measures, support community engagement,”

Trinidad and Tobago has recorded more than 330 murders so far this year, according to police figures. A state of emergency is currently in effect in the twin-island nation. Authorities implemented the measure in July, accusing a criminal network in prisons across the country of planning to assassinate key government officials and attack government institutions.

The US embassy in Trinidad and Tobago warned Americans to stay away from US government facilities in the US nation in October amid a spate of deaths in Caribbean attacks on suspected drug dealers.

The embassy did not say why it issued it, only saying, “please avoid and refuse to visit all US government facilities,” as it urged people to see for themselves. “
