US Mountain Clicber among 2 killed in New Zealand’s highest west, 2 Others rescued

Two climbers died on Aoraki, New Zealand’s tallest mountain, while two others from the same group were rescued, authorities said.

One of the two people killed in the fall was from the US, officials said Wednesday. Specialists from rescue organizations and government agencies found the bodies of the passengers late Tuesday, according to Area Commander Vicki Walker.

Authorities, he said, were working with the US Consulate. A coroner in New Zealand will investigate the death.

The other person who died was an internationally respected guide and member of the New Zealand Mountain Guides Association, the association said in a statement.

Sgt. Kevin Mercerain told the Timaru Herald the pair had become attached to the rope when they fell near the summit of Aoraki, also known as Mt Pook.

Authorities learned late Monday night local time that four climbers needed help on the mountain, in New Zealand’s South Island. Two of the passengers were rescued by helicopter in the early hours of Tuesday morning, Walker said.

They were unrestricted. Searchers in two helicopters were looking at night for the rest of the passengers, who were found dead hours later.

Aoraki is 12,218 meters high and is part of the Southern Alps, a high and cold mountain range that runs the length of the South Island. The settlement of the same name at its base is a place for domestic and foreign tourists.

The higher price is popular among experienced riders. Its terrain is technically difficult because of the cracks, the risk of avalanche, the changing climate and the movement of the glacier.

More than 240 deaths have been recorded on the mountain and the surrounding national park since the beginning of the 20th century. Many of those who died on the mountain have never been found.

The passengers were lost for five days before New Zealand authorities acted, saying the discovery of their belongings suggested the men had died.

The two deaths in New Zealand follow a spate of deaths on some of the world’s tallest and tallest peaks in recent months.
