The real story takes place in the weeks leading up to the summit – in the choreography, the pageantry and the inevitable assertion of American power across the Indo-Pacific. When Xi Jinping was staying across from Donald Trump, he was meeting with the US President who was already stationed in the US military in the region, confirmed their relationship, and reminded the Beijingers that the United States remains the main power in the Pacific.
In the days leading up to the summit, Trump delivered a series of moves together with a strategic message. When reporters entered the airspace and asked about Taiwan, he simply replied, “There’s not much to ask. Taiwan is Taiwan.”

The statement – off-the-cuff but unshakeable in meaning – was thrown back on speculation that his administration would soften the blow in pursuit of a grand bargain with Beijing. Trump’s statement told the XI that the United States would not abandon the foundation of stability in East Asia to get a better trade deal.
