Billy Crystal Breaks Silence After Death of Late Friend Rob Reiner

Billy Crystal and the wife Janice Crystaland other close Hollywood friends, they remember When Harry Met Sally director Rob Reiner two days after his death.
A joint statement was shared The Associated Press on Tuesday, December 16, by Crystals, Albert again Kimberly Brooks, Martin Short, Alan again Robin Zweibel, Larry David again Ashley Underwood, Marc Shaiman again Lou Mirabal, Barry again Diana Levinson and the Ambassador James Costos again Michael Smith.
“Going to the movies in a darkened theater full of strangers having ordinary experiences, laughing, crying, screaming in fear, or watching an intense drama unfold is still an unforgettable experience. Tell us the story that the audience wants from us,” the statement began. “Using everything he learned from his father Carl [Reiner] and his mentor Norman LearRob Reiner is not only a great comedian, he became a master storyteller. No other director has his range. From comedy to drama to mockumentary to documentary he was always at the top of his game. He captivated the audience. They trust him. They lined up to see his films.”
The statement continued, “His sense of humor was unmatched, his passion for getting the dialogue music right, and his sharpening of the dramatic edge was simply superb. For actors, he loved them. For writers he made them better. His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened, he brought it into the show. They always felt that working as a team was his team’s privilege but as his team. Only part of his legacy.”
The statement then noted Rob’s interests outside of the entertainment world. “Rob was also an enthusiastic, brave citizen, who not only cared for the country he loved, he did everything he could to make it better together with his loving wife, Michele [Singer Reiner]he had the perfect partner. Strong and determined, Michele and Rob Reiner gave many of their lives to improve our citizens… They were a special force together, selfless and inspiring. We were their friends, and we will miss them forever.”
Rob’s longtime friends ended their tribute with a poignant movie reference. “There’s a line from one of Rob’s favorite movies A Wonderful Life‘One person’s life affects many other lives, and when it’s absent, it leaves a terrible hole, doesn’t it?’ You don’t know anything.”
Rob and Michele were found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14. He was 78, she was 68. A spokesman for the Reiner family said. Variety in a statement at the time, “It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are deeply saddened by this sudden loss, and ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time.”
Rob and Michele had three children: sons Nick again Jake Reiner and a daughter Romy Reiner. Rob is also a father to his daughter Tracyhe found him married to his late ex-wife Penny Marshall.
After reports that a family member was involved in a fatal shooting at the Reiners’ home, the Los Angeles Police Department’s Parker City Jail confirmed Nick’s arrest without bail on December 15. He was charged with two counts of first degree murder on Tuesday. If convicted, he could face life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

Getty ImagesAs details continue to emerge about Rob and Michele’s deaths, Hollywood stars are sharing heartfelt tributes to honor the director. Crystal again Larry David it is reported that they were seen arriving separately at the couple’s house on the day they died.
According to ABC 7, Billy and his wife, Janice Crystalthey were seen walking on the street where the Reiners lived. A neighbor told the outlet that Billy “looked like he was about to cry.”
Billy and Rob met in 1975 while working together All in the Family. Rob played Michael “Meathead” Stivic in the game Norman Lear sitcom, and Billy was cast as his best friend. Playing best friends on screen creates a real-life friendship between the characters.
“What impressed me the most about Rob was that, one, he was smart, but two, he was very smart,” Billy recalled in a column written for him. The Hollywood Reporter in 2016. “It was Rob who worked on the script with the writers and the producers; it was Rob who made sense of what we had to do in the episode. He was smart and very precise and funny at the same time. And he was a terrific actor as well. It’s the most impressive combination of talents I ever met for the first time — and, he was just funny.”
The two went on to work together in many of Rob’s hit films, including This is in Spinal Tap, When Harry Met Sally again The Princess Bride.
“If you look at, let’s say, his first eight films, they are different,” continued Billy. “Spinal Tap it’s a thing of the past, then Stand by Mesoft and charming and understanding, and then When Harry meets Sally, which is a funny romantic comedy, too Sadness again Beautiful Little Men. No other director that I know of at the time had the range that he had and the ability to pull off all the different genres that he had. He is brave, and he does not repeat himself.”
As well as his talent, Billy praised his friend’s “amazing heart” and love of activism. He went on to share his “favorite” memory from the first screening of When Harry Met Sally.
“Rob and I were sitting in the back next to each other. And then the orgasm scene happens, and the place goes wild. When Rob’s mom, Estelle, says, ‘I’m going to get what she’s got,’ there’s a roar, the kind of laughter you can hear in a concert hall,” Billy recalled. “It’s those moments that make movies look like this: You come up with a joke in September, and you don’t hear the punch line until May. We just held hands because we knew something fun was going to happen with this movie.”
