Washington – President Trump said Sunday that he “wouldn’t want” a second reported ferry strike earlier this year, while indicating he was looking into a specific labor issue.
“The first strike was very deadly, it was okay and if there were two people,” the President told reporters about the Air Force. “But Pete said it didn’t happen. I trust him a lot.”
The Washington Post reported on Friday that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave a verbal order not to leave survivors of the first strike on a suspected cruise ship in the Caribbean. The post reported that the first strike left two survivors in the water, and that the program commander, Frank Bradley, ordered a second strike to comply with Hegseth’s command, and kill the survivors.
Hegseth called the reporting “designed, inflammatory and disrespectful,” saying that activities in the Caribbean are “permitted under international law.”
CBS News has not independently verified the Washington Post’s reporting.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavett was asked about the strikes during a White House briefing on Monday. “Does the management deny that that second strike happened, or did it happen, and the management deny that Begseth Hegseth gave the order?” The reporter asked.
“This ends up being true,” replied the opener, before reading the written statement. “Hegseth Hegseth and the secretary made it clear that the President’s narcoterrorist groups are under the direction of the war in accordance with these kinetic events. The states of America were eliminated.”
The Post’s report raised concerns from lawmakers and experts, including a group of military lawyers who opposed Saturday’s assessment that the second reported strike could be a violation of international or domestic law. In Congress, leaders of the House and Senate Armed Services Committees will investigate the next strike. And Democratic Sen.
