Trump pardoned me after serving 20 years for a non-violent drug conviction

Getting out of prison after almost 20 years was like waking up from a nightmare. I had been sentenced to life in prison the first time, for a non-violent drug offense. My two brothers were also locked out, and while we were working, both of our parents died. That loss was more painful than the sentence.

We were not there to support them in their last days. We couldn’t comfort them, or each other. We couldn’t say goodbye. And knowing that when it mattered most, we were locked up in the cells … it crushed us.

So, when I finally got home – thanking President Donald Trump for granting me leniency from what would have been an unimaginably harsh life sentence – all I wanted was to stand with my brothers, the only family I had left, and scatter our parents’ ashes together. It wasn’t just to respect them. It was about closing one of the most painful chapters in our lives. It was about being a family again.

But even after our release, we couldn’t grieve together.

Here is the problem. We were placed on supervised release by the government. That meant we needed a permit to see each other, even though our crimes were non-violent, and we were no longer breaking the law. The government deprived us of the opportunity to mourn our parents in the way families should.

That moment opened my eyes to how broken supervised release is. It wasn’t meant to be this way. This program should help people rebuild their lives, find work, reconnect with family safely and re-enter society with support and stay crime-free (like my brothers and I did). Instead, in most cases, it is another punitive sentence. Prevents renewal instead of support.

But there is hope. Members of Congress introduced the Safeguarding Act, a bill designed to fix what’s broken. Because a system that does not allow me and my brothers to mourn our parents together is not a system that promotes safety or rehabilitation.

Supervised releases often sound like a trap. The laws are so strict and unforgiving that even people who do the right things are always at risk of deportation, despite years of progress. Prohibition of travel across state or regional lines without permission. Regularly required meetings with probation officers, ignoring work or family obligations. It is absolutely forbidden to be with anyone else who has a criminal record, even your brothers.

I refuse to find that any of this keeps society safe or helps anyone rebuild. It prolongs punishment, reduces redemption and prevents real second chances. Meanwhile, it distracts law enforcement from focusing on the truly dangerous people. That makes no sense.

It doesn’t have to be this way. If the Safeguard Act becomes law, it restores fairness and balance. It will allow people who meet strict security criteria to have access to surveillance, so that authorities can focus on real threats, as they should.

Trump, while known for being tough on crime, also understood this: that people who paid off their debts deserved a shot at rebuilding. That’s why I thank him so much. His decision not only restored my freedom; it gave me back my hope.

He brought me home to my son, my family, my brothers and my community. He saw humanity in a man who was often ignored by the system. I stand with the president in support of others like me, and our families will remember his act of kindness for decades.

If we build on his example and pass the Safeguarding Act, we can be sure that our federal enforcement system truly supports second chances.

I share my story not out of bitterness, but out of gratitude for a president who believes in order, and the opportunity to speak as a free person.

My family is still carrying the weight of the years we lost. But we also have hope – we hope that America can learn from stories like mine and make sure that no other family endures what I did.
