Black Friday shoppers were sent scrambling after a shooting at the Westfield Valley Fair Mall in Santa Clara, injuring three, police said.
Three people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries – at least two were shot, according to the San José Police Department.
Shawn Kulasingham, 23, was at the edge of the family when he said he heard a loud voice at 5:35 in the evening, then he saw a “Sea of people” running to all the shops.
“It was a stamp,” he said by phone a few hours later. “The building was almost shaking.”
Kulasingham grabbed his sister and dad and went into the nearest store that looked safe, Abercrombie & Fitch. They hid behind the racks in the closets and cabinets while people were busy, she said.
They spent 20 minutes inside the store before the staff asked them to leave in a single file line with a police escort. The parking order was confusing, Kalasingham said, and he forgot his black Friday – the coat he had bought – back at the Abercrombie store.
“The fear was palpable. This is a really difficult thing to happen during the holidays,” said Kulasingham, a former conmetion student. The mall shootings in her hometown and the recent assassination of a congressman in DC were a lot to deal with, she said.
At least 20 customers were brought into the closets of Bloomingdales by the safety of the store next to the boat of Zuberi and his wife, who had sent about this incident to X.
They tried not to get angry and not to talk about the shooting because there were children living with them, said Zuberi.
The police gave the all-clear to leave the shop and shops around 7 in the evening, he said. Traffic was backed up at all exits as people tried to leave, he said.
“I’m thankful for the police, first responders, and mall workers who may have been scared but stepped up to guide the people at the end of the line,” he replied, no one could fall to the ground.

Emergency calls to the police and fire departments at 5:55 PM said there were two to three people injured and the shooter was still at large. Several calls began at 5:35 PM with detailed information that several people were at the lodge in the area and reported cases of sightings and traces of blood from Kacy, said the tailors.
Shortly after 6:31 PM, the City Department said there was no active shooter.
Officers arrived at the chaos stage, according to their radio dispatch.
“We have a lot of people running on the street,” one emergency radio operator said. The fugitives escaped the traffic jam while crossing the road near the shopping malls.
At 7:30 p.m. Friday, the police had yet to identify the suspect or say if the person is at large. “My prayers are with the victims and I know our officers are doing everything they can to find the person responsible and hold them accountable.

The police said that this foreigner appeared to be an isolated incident, and that people should avoid the area.
