The United States and Ukraine were pressed in talks in Switzerland on Monday to come up with an acceptable peace plan, after agreeing to modify the US proposal that the Kremlin Wish Allies.
The White House and Kyiv said in a joint statement that they had drafted a “refined peace framework” after the first day of talks in Geneva on Sunday, although they did not provide details.
The United States blindsided Kyiv and European countries with a 28-point peace plan last week, giving humanity until Thursday to come up with a plan to end Europe’s deadliest war since World War II.
After the talks on Sunday, no public statement has been released on how the revised plan will handle controversial issues such as how to ensure Ukraine’s security in the fight against Russia. President VolOdymyr Zesenskyy said negotiations are still ongoing.
“We all continue to work with allies, especially the United States, to look for compromises that will strengthen but not weaken,” Zelenskyy said via video link at a separate conference of Allies of Ukraine in Sweden.
Zelenskyy said that Russia must pay for the war in Ukraine and that the decision to use frozen Russian assets was important.
“Right now, we are in a critical situation, and we are working with the United States, European partners and many others to define measures that can end Russia’s war against us, against Ukraine, and bring real security.”
The leaders of the ‘willing countries’ – non-aligned countries that support Ukraine – will hold video conferences on Tuesday to discuss peace talks, said a spokesman for the European Commission. In addition to Ukraine’s European Allies, Canada has been included in past meetings of the Coalition this year.
“A lot of work still needs to be done regarding the peace proposals for Ukraine,” he told reporters during a daily briefing in Brussels.
US President Donald Trump has stepped up pressure on Ukraine to reach an agreement. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who led the American delegation in Sunday’s remarks, said the deadline for reaching an agreement on Thursday may not be set in stone.
Zelenskyy could travel to the United States as soon as this week to discuss the most sensitive aspects of the Trump administration, according to sources familiar with the matter.
In a social media post on Sunday, Trump said that “the leadership of Ukraine” had expressed zero gratitude “for US efforts to end the war – a comment that received high criticism in February when Zelenskyy received criticism from Trump and Vice President JD Vence.
