The Trump administration will not deport Cusma, the Canadian ambassador told us

Kirsten Hillman, who also served as Canada’s lead agreement on trade talks with the US, said Thursday that the basic rules of the Canada-Us-Mexico Agreement (Cusma) apply to all three countries.

“There’s a big base there, and I haven’t heard any indication from the US side that they want to change that base,” Hillman told Katie Simpson in Washington on Thursday.

“I don’t think this is a place for alarm,” he said. “The strong, predictable, open, open trade relationship that exists between our three countries is essential to the prosperity of our three countries. So that’s what gives me confidence that this agreement will remain.”

All three countries must indicate by July 1 of the following year whether they want to extend the agreement, renew their terms or accept it.

Any country can announce its intention to withdraw from cusma at any time by giving six months’ notice.
