The prime minister is being urged to raise the case of a British woman and her father who were killed by methanol in a car in Vietnam when he met the country’s leader.
Greta Otteson, 33, and Arno Quinton, 36, were found dead on Boxing Day in Hoi An, Vietnam, after drinking poisoned Limoncello bought by Grete’s parents as a gift.
Ann Davies, MP for the family, wrote Sir Ker Keir Starmer before his meeting with Tô Lâm, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, in London, who received the full attention and resources that the Vietnamese authorities deserve “.
The Prime Minister’s Office has been approached for comment.
Paul Otteson said he was concerned about what he saw as a lack of action in relation to his daughter’s death and called on Sir Keir as a “father” to raise the case.
Greta Ottesen and Arno Quinton were found dead at their villa on Boxing Day 2024, with post-mortem tests revealing they died of toxic methanol.
In February, the police arrested and charged a barman who worked in a restaurant in Hoi aa “violating regulations on food safety” for the use of filtered water, used with white sugar to create two bottles of limouncello “.
Methanol is a type of alcohol commonly found in cleaning products, gasoline and antifreeze.
It is similar to ethanol, which is used to make alcoholic beverages, but it is cheaper and has a higher toxicity that is toxic to humans because of the way it is processed by the body.
Paul and Susan Otteson told the BBC last month that they had a couple of weeks before they died, celebrating their engagement that limoncello would be sent as a Christmas present to Greta and Arno.
The family said they have not been given any updates since the arrest of Barman and Paul, adding that it is “sad” that they have to ask for help.
“I believe that the PM has children who are close to the age where they will soon continue their education and maybe go for a year.”
“I sincerely hope that he and his wife don’t go through the pain that we, and other UK families, are enduring, with the horrific crime of methanol poisoning.”
Paul urged Sir Keir to ask Secretary General Lâm to provide an update on the investigation and explain what is being done in the country to stop alcohol poisoning.
In a letter, Ann Davies Plaad Cymru MP for Keerfyddin, also urged the prime minister to raise the issue during the meeting.
“The slow pace at which Greta’s case is progressing in Vietnam is worrying and also raises concerns about the welfare of other British citizens who may visit the country in the future.”
“Greta’s parents are not only devastated by the loss of their child, who was brutally taken from them, but now they have to fight an epic battle with the Vietnamese authorities to seek the truth and justice for their daughter.”
The Vietnamese government and Da Nang city police have been asked for comment.
