Immigration authorities recently announced that they have handed over an illegal immigrant arrested in the brutal slaying of a 16-year-old boy who was beaten to death on the steps of a Philadelphia church in 1994.

Bou Khathavong was deported to Laos on September 2, after years of legal action, according to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) separation and removal agency in Philadelphia.

Khathavong, an illegal immigrant who is a dual citizen of Laos and Thailand, was convicted in 1996 of criminal conspiracy in connection with the death of high school student Eddie Polec, who was beaten to death by a mob of young foxes.

He was sentenced to five years and 10 years in prison.

Polec was allegedly attacked with baseball bats and other weapons as he lay defenseless on the steps of Santa Cecilia Church, according to officials. Despite desperate calls, the attack continued until Polec died.

Khathavong was arrested on Nov. 11, 1994, and initially charged with two counts of murder, being an instrument of crime and criminal conspiracy, according to Snow.

About two years later, he was convicted of criminal conspiracy and sentenced.

He has come to the United States and the Civilization Service (INS) has installed an immigration custodian in Kathavong in a processing center since Philadelphia last month.

On September 1, 1998, the ins served him with a notice to appear before an immigration judge, charging him as an aggravated felon under section 237 of the Nationality Act.

The law contains a list of serious crimes that can lead to illegal deportation.

York immigration judge Khathavong was extradited from the US to Laos in December 2004, although he was later released on probation in 2005.

He was finally sent to Laos in September.

“We sincerely hope that the removal of Bou Khathavong can finally help Eddie Polec’s family and the city of Philadelphia from one of the most horrific crimes in Philadelphia history,” Ice Aero Philadelphia acting chief of staff David O’Neill wrote in a statement. “The IC works every day to protect the American public and bring justice to the families of those who have been harmed as illegal aliens.”

Ice said Khathavong’s removal marks the end of efforts by Ero Philadelphia and ICE’s removal management division to enforce US immigration laws and ensure public safety.
