The future of wine in America created by a prominent New York winemaker

A well-known wine producer calls New York’s Finger Lakes “one of the best continental US wine growing climates” – highlighting the beauty and benefits of an area that is expanding across the country.

Nova Cadamatre, along with her husband, Brian, opened Trestle Thirty One Winery in 2015 in the Finger Lakes. He splits his time between the emerging powerhouse state and California’s world-renowned Napa Valley.

Unlike California, where summers are dry and conditions are stable, the Finger Lakes sees “rainfall of some kind throughout the year — and that includes having rain during the growing season,” Cadamatre told Fox News Digital.

The result is a wine that tastes different than anywhere else in the country, he said.

Wine Enthusiast recently named the Finger Lakes as the American Wine Region of the Year – a feat the office of Gov. Kathy Hochul said it “recognizes the world-class winemaking, sustainable practices and collaborative community that have helped define New York State as a leader in American viticulture.”

A note from his office added, “It’s a win for our country’s economy and our reputation as a global wine destination.”

In giving the honor, Wine Enthusiast said, “New York’s largest wine-growing region has come a long way in a few decades. Where wine lovers once had to look for quality, these days it’s the norm.”

“Making wine in New York really forces you to be creative and very smart because the industry is not as well established as it is in California,” said Cadamatre.

The region is developing rapidly.

Since his first harvest in the Finger Lakes, Cadamatre said he has watched the area go from an underdog to a rising power.

Climate change, while depressing many wine regions, has had a paradoxical benefit in the Finger Lakes, Cadamatre said.

Trestle Thirty One’s Engine Riesling is featured in the Fox News American Wine Club.

“We’re getting warmer,” he said.

“We’re able to grow different varieties than we did 20 years ago and we’re always maturing.”

He likens the county’s trail to Napa’s first ascent.

“The Finger Lakes, right now, is like where Napa was in the 1970s,” he said.

Cadamatre views Trestle Thirty One’s Engine Riesling, featured on the Fox News American Wine Club, and Cabernet Franc, available through the Fox News Wine Shop, as ambassadors of the region that forms its identity.

“They have a great knowledge of what the district has to offer,” she said.

Engine Riesling is “good as an apéritif or a sipper or with a cheese plate and charcuterie, sitting with friends,” he said.

“But it’s also dry enough that it will go really well with light, red meat.”

For a winemaker who has built his career in both sectors, Cadamatre is optimistic about the future of viticulture in the Finger Lakes.

“I think it’s a real testament to all the work the community has done here to hear more about our beautiful wine region,” Cadamatre said.

She is the first woman winemaker in the United States to receive the prestigious title of Master of Wine – which she received in 2017.

“It’s the highest level of certification you can get in the world of wine,” said Cadamatre. “Right now, we are about 432 in the world.”

As he also recently told SUNY Morrisville, where he earned his degree in horticulture, “I’ve been working my ass off for a long time. I’ve made a lot of wine in 20 years.”
