In October 2025, a Facebook post (archived) about a strange discovery across the platform. According to the post, scientists found robotic micro spiders from comet 3i / atlas in Antarctica. The spiders, which appeared on the comet “during its closest pass to our planet,” were collecting data from the ice and transmitting the information to space.
The post was retweeted by other Facebook pages (saved to) shortly after it was originally posted. Some people have posted stopes to ask if this claim is true or search the website for the same.
There is no evidence to support any of the information in the story shared in the post. Therefore, we rate this claim as false.
SNOPES searches for “robot spiders 3i / Atlas” on Google, DuckDuckgo, Bing and Yahoo. There were no results except social media posts related to the claim in all search engines. If this story, which is a Facebook Post described as “sending a global shock,” was real, mainstream outlets, were not willing, it might be some kind of scientific publication or update that was released.
In fact, the details of the story just don’t add up.
The Facebook post said that scientists suggested that the spiders were “protected” from the comet during its near-Earth pass, but that hasn’t actually happened yet. 3i / Atlas’ closest approach to Earth will not be until December 19, 2025, according to the European Space Agency. Images produced by Nasa have shown the Sun to be partially or fully between the Earth and 3i/atlas for most of the time since it was discovered.
The picture attached to the story was not real. Although the area was described as Antarctica, the northern lights – which do not appear around the South Pole – can be seen in the sky at the top left. Additionally, the “spiders” in the images had different leg sizes and the inset image of a different ‘spider’ from the spiders seen in the larger image. This inconsistency suggests that this image was generated by AI.
Space Lane, the page that posted this story, has posted multiple stories that suggest contact with or discovery of extraterrestrial life. Most of these objects sent by 3i / atlas, a comet that appeared outside the solar system and was discovered in 2025.
