The Cowboys suffered back-to-back seasons, as Dak Prescott was benched and the quarterback was taken out in back-to-back losses.

The Dallas Cowboys suffered their first losing season since 2002 after falling 34-17 to the New York Giants on Sunday.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was ejected from the game at halftime, and defensive end Donovan Ezeiruaku was ejected from the game after pulling the helmet of a Giants player between downs in the third quarter.

Prescott’s game and season ended after the first half where he fumbled and passed for just 70 yards. He left the game leading the league in passing for the season.

Without Prescott, the Cowboys were outscored 18-7 in the second half and the team got into a costly scuffle with the rival Giants, which resulted in penalties and ejections. Ezeiruaku’s ejection came after the Giants scored a touchdown to go up 22-10, and there was an altercation involving pushing, shoving and intentionally grabbing a face mask.

Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams was also called for an unnecessary penalty, which put the Giants at the one-yard line after the try, as New York went two, up 24-10.

Dallas never recovered, as backup quarterback Joe Milton threw a touchdown pass in a 17-point loss to end the season.

It was a fitting end to a failed season for the Cowboys, who officially extended their Super Bowl drought to 30 years.

Dallas entered this year’s trade deadline in an effort to bolster its playoff chances, trading a 2027 first-round pick and a 2026 second-round pick to the New York Jets for tight end Quinnen Williams. But it won’t pay off in the short term for the Cowboys after they fail in 2025. Williams is under contract until 2027.

Questions about whether the Cowboys will compete in 2025 were raised after the team traded linebacker Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers before the season. The Cowboys defense is 29th in the NFL this year without Parsons.

Dallas gave its fans hope by winning three games in a row in November, moving from 3-5-1 to 6-5-1 and within striking distance of the seventh seed in the NFC. But first loss 44-30 at Detroit Lions Dis. 4 took all the air out and dropped Dallas’ playoff chances to 8%. They went 1-3 in their last four games after the record-breaking loss to the Lions

Meanwhile, the Giants improved to 4-13 on the season with their third straight losing season. The Giants had a chance to secure the second or first pick in the NFL Draft with a loss on Sunday, but could drop as low as seventh overall with a win.

The Giants also beat the Cowboys and Eagles in the same season for the first time since 2020.
