A Texas mother is accused of locking up her entire house while her child is at school, and leaving without telling her.

Erica Renee Sanders is facing a felony child endangerment charge after she allegedly walked out of the Copperas Cove apartment where her 12-year-old son lived while he was in school — without a complaint filed by PEOPLE. Local outlet KWTX first reported the news.

Middle Schooler Schooler Reced Offices with the Copperas Cove police department in this situation at about 5: 18 PM local time on Friday, Oct. 17, after “his family took him out and left him there,” according to the complaint.

“Furniture and other household items” that were in the apartment when the little boy went to school that Friday morning were gone, according to the account of the responding officer of the events. The official, who described the unit as “empty” and “completely sterile,” said the boy confirmed that “the apartment was not like that when he left.”

While police were at the home, a neighbor told authorities that Sanders and her boyfriend, Keven Dwyone Adams, had a ‘history’ of kicking her son around the apartment. One of the responding officers provided this, saying there was a “history of conflict” between the couple and the child, according to the complaint.

The child also told the couple that the couple had indicated that they “moved at some point,” but they did not tell him when. Adams later told police that his girlfriend “wasn’t abandoning” his son, “but that he was living with her now and [her son] Complaints were received at his home,” the complaint states.

Sanders said her brother — her son’s uncle — intended to pick her son up from school, but refused to provide officials with contact information or any additional information about the person, according to the complaint. Adams then told officers that he was going to pick up Sanders’ son and take him to his uncle, but “many hours passed without any attempts to find the child. The police also met with the uncle’s girlfriend, who said she had no idea that he had brought the center fielder back.

Police brought the 12-year-old to the Copperas Cove police department and alerted child protective services (CPs), according to the complaint. Following a conversation with Sanders and Adams, CPS told officers to release the boy to Adams, who had refused to provide a new address for ADAMS. Police must consult water usage records to find a residence.

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Finally, around 9:20 PM on the same day, Adams was noticed by the boy at home, but he told one of the officers that he would not take the child if he authorized the arrest of Manars. And “she cried for a long time about the same 12-year-old,” the officer said.

Both Sanders and Adams were arrested, and the case “has been forwarded to the Prosecutor’s Office for review,” a spokesperson for the Copperas Cove Police Department said in a statement to PEOPLE.

Sanders has since been charged with knowingly abandoning a child younger than 15 without intent to return, a third-degree felony in Texas, according to court documents.
