Melbourne, Australia – The man accused of killing 15 people at Bondi Beach in Sydney received firearms training in New South Wales state outside Sydney with his father, according to Australian police documents released on Monday.
The documents, made public following the appearance in court of a video of Naveed Akram at a Sydney hospital where he was treated for an abdominal injury, said the two men recorded the images justifying the well-planned attack.
Police injured Akram at the scene on December 14 and killed his father, Sajid Akram, 50.
The state government confirmed that Naveed Akram was moved from hospital to prison on Monday. Authorities have not identified the facility.
The 24-year-old suspect and his father started the attack by throwing four explosives into the celebrating crowd an annual Jewish event at Bondi Beachbut the devices failed to explode, the documents said.
Police described the devices as three aluminum pipe bombs and a tennis ball bomb containing explosives, a gun and steel balls. None exploded, but police described them as “active” IEDs.
The pair had rented a room in the Sydney suburb of Campsie for three weeks before leaving at 2.16am on the day of the attack. CCTV captured them carrying what police suspect were two rifles, a pistol, five IEDs and two homemade ISIS flags wrapped in blankets.
Police also released photos of the gunmen firing from a footbridge, giving them the vantage point and protection of waist-high concrete walls.
The largest IED was found after a gunfight near a footbridge in the trunk of the son’s car, which had been left covered in flags.
The authorities were looking into the father and son’s moon trip in the Philippineswhere there has been a decades-long Islamic insurgency in the south of the country.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said last week that the attack was inspired by ISISand there is an ISIS-linked militant group operating in a remote part of the Philippines.
But a hotel receptionist in Davao City told CBS News that the attackers never left their room for more than a day.
Authorities have charged Akram with 59 counts, including 15 counts of murder, 40 counts of wounding with intent to kill in relation to injured survivors and one count of committing an act of terrorism.
The antisemitic attack at the start of the eight-day Hanukkah celebration was Australia’s worst mass shooting since a single gunman killed 35 people in the state of Tasmania in 1996.
The New South Wales government introduced draft laws to Parliament on Monday that Premier Chris Minns said would be the toughest in Australia.
I new restrictions would include making Australian citizenship a condition of eligibility for a firearms licence. That would exclude Sajid Akram, who was an Indian citizen with a permanent resident visa.
Sajid Akram was also legally in possession of six guns and rifles. The new legal limit for recreational shooters will be a limit of four guns.
Police said a video found on Naveed Akram’s phone showed him and his father expressing their “political and religious views and appearing to summarize their motivations for the Bondi terror attack.”
The men are seen in the video “criticizing the actions of Zionists” and “adhering to a religious ideology associated with (ISIS),” police said.
The video, which was shot in October, shows them “shooting guns in a discreet manner” in a grassy area surrounded by trees, police said.
“There is evidence that the Accused and his father planned this terrorist attack well for many months,” said the police.
An impromptu memorial that sprang up near Bondi Pavilion after the massacre, as thousands of mourners brought flowers and heartfelt cards, was removed on Monday as the beach returned to normal activity. The Sydney Jewish Museum will preserve part of the memorial.
Funerals of the victims continued on Monday with the service of the French national Dan Elkayam held near Woollahra, in the heart of Sydney’s Jewish life. The 27-year-old moved from Paris to Sydney last year.
The Ministry of Health said that 12 people who were injured in the incident remained in hospitals on Monday.
