The arrest of Terry Rozier, Chauncey Billips is Sports’ latest gambling scandal

Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billips, and Miami Sheat Guard Terry Rozier, and former coach and coach Damone were among those arrested by the FBI as part of an illegal gambling and sports betting investigation Thursday.

The investigation is tied to members of LA COSA nostra crime families.

The arrest, which has exploded the NBA World, is another chapter in which players and coaches have been noted for their involvement in illegal sports laundering over the past century.

Here’s a look back at some of the biggest professional sports betting scandals.

• In 1920, eight members of the Chicago White Sox were indicted by the Chicago Grand Jury for fixing the 1919 World Series. It became known as the “Black Sox Scandal.” The judge reinstated the players’ case, but the white soux owner Charles Comileskey suspended the players, including “nothing to say” Joe Jackson. A year after the suspension, they were permanently banned by New Kenesaw Mountain baseball commissioner Landis.
• In 1946, Foler Babe Pratt’s Hockey Hall was temporarily suspended for gambling. He was reinstated a few weeks later, with the NHL’s Board of Governors issuing a warning that any further gambling warnings could result in a player’s life suspension.
• In 1948, two years after the NHL’s warning to the governors, Billy Taylor and Don Gallinger were issued lifetime bans from sports betting.
• In 1951, four members of the Adolph Rupp-coached Kentucky Wildcats were accused of bribing gamblers to get a nit game against the 1948-1949 season. There were 35 active players accused of fixing at least 86 games between 1947 and 1951. An NCAA investigation found multiple violations, which resulted in Kentucky’s 195-53 season being canceled.
• In 1989, Cincinnati Reds Legend Pete Rose received a lifetime ban for gambling on sports. Rose was found to have placed the most bets on red to win from 1985 to -987 while playing and managing the team. He admitted to gambling in 2004 after years of seeking his innocence. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred removed the color from the permanent list in May 205, months after his death, allowing Rose to finally be considered for the baseball hall of fame. Rose is baseball’s all-time leader in hits with 4,256.

• In 1996, 13 Boston football players were suspended for gambling. Two of the players bet their team during the 45-17 loss to Syracuse. Head Coach Dan Henning informed school officials that the allegations of players placing bets on bookings and leaving the field were quiet. No evidence of point shaving was found.
• In 2007, assistant coach Rick Tocchet was given a two-year suspension after pleading guilty to promoting gambling as an assistant coach with the Choenix Coyotes. He was reinstated by the NHL the following season. Also, it was originally included in a gambling program entitled “Operation Slallshot” involving a new Jersey ring was several players; Wayne Gretzky’s wife, Janet Jones; and Gretzky’s former agent and then Coyotes General Manager Michael Barnett. Tocchet is currently the head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers.
• In 2008, NBA star Thembo Thenaghy pleaded guilty to wire fraud and wiretapping for taking thousands of dollars from a gambler so he could get inside tips on games, including the games he worked on. He was sentenced by a Federal Judge to 15 months behind bars.
• In 2023, Golfer Phil MICLELLON is alleged to have invested more than $1 billion over the past three decades in a book written by Gambler Billy Walters. In the letter, Walters wrote that Mickelson wanted to bet $400,000 on the 2012 Ryder Cup, when he played in the United States. The six-time major winner was banned from betting on the Ryder Cup, he wrote in a social media post to stop gambling. Mickelson said he crossed the line into measuring addiction.
• In 2023, Ottawa Senators Propane Pinto was suspended for 41 sports gambling restrictions. The NHL said there was no evidence that Pinto Bet on Hockey, and Pinto did not disclose the information when he returned to the Senators.

• In March 2024, the Los Angeles Dodgers fired Ippei Mizuhara, a translator and close friend of two-star prospect Shohei Ohtani, following reports regarding his ties to an illegal bookmaker. Three months later, Mizuhara pleaded guilty in federal court to bank and tax fraud for stealing approximately $17 million from Ohtani’s bank account. He spent the money to cover his growing bets and debts with the illegal BookMaker, as well as $325,000 worth of baseball cards and his medical expenses. Mizuhara was freed from the language barrier to keep Ohtani’s financial advisors from understanding their client, and at times, Mizuhara even impersonated a banker to extend the illusion.
• In April 2024, the NBA banned Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter after the League Probe found that he disclosed confidential information to sports researchers and was included in the games. Porter even bet on the raptors to lose. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called Porter’s actions “obvious. The investigation began after unusual gambling patterns in Porter’s performance on March 20 against the Sacrameo Amakhosi. The organization provided that PORTER gave the bettor information about his health before that game and said – it is known that another person – placed a bet of $ 80,000 that Porter would not call the prices Book sports online. The bet would have won $1.1 million.
• In June 2024, San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano was banned for life by MLB for betting on baseball. MLB said Marcano placed 387 baseball bets totaling more than $150,000 with a legal book in 2022 and 2023. The 20-year-old Venezuelan is the first active player in a century to be banned for life for gambling.
• And in 2024, then-Oakland Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly was suspended for one year for betting on baseball. Each of those four players submitted less than $1,000. Saalfrank and Rodríguez have not played before in the majors.

• In February 2025, umpire Pat Hoberg was fired by MLB for sharing his legal gambling accounts with a friend who bet on baseball games and deleting electronic messages related to the league’s investigation. While MLB said Profewu could not reveal evidence of hoberg in baseball or senior sports, MLB Senior Vice President of Operations Michael Hill recommended on May 24, 2024, that hoberg was fired. Manfred’s resolve increased. Among the most limited pitchers to judge the strike zone, Hoberg can apply to be reinstated without spring training in 2026. MLB said the friend made 141 baseball bets between April 2, 2021, and November 1, 2023, totaling nearly $214,000 with a total win of about $35,000. Eight of those placed in the bacon involved sports where Hoberg worked.
• In July 2025, Major League Baseball was placed under the supervision of Cleveland manager Luis Ortiz on unpaid leave due to gambling. • In September 2025, the NCAA announced that it was investigating sports betting violations involving Eastern Michigan, Temple, North Carolina State, North Carolina A & TICISISIPPI VALLEY State. The NCAA’s integrity monitoring program and network of written sources text and direct messages to social media platforms and uncover unusual betting activities surrounding regular season games. Violations include betting by students and opposing their teams, sharing information with third parties for sports betting purposes, falsifying goals or results and/or refusing to participate in investigations.
