Setting a movie in an outdoor setting opens up an endless field of possibilities. Franchises like Star Trek use it to hopefully experiment with what-ifs. Star Wars uses it as a backdrop for high adventure and complex Galactic politics.

In fact, an empty, airless space is a place where it is difficult to exist in order to survive. When Science Fiction explores that, the results are often some of the scariest stories ever told on screen.

These are the scariest movies ever set in the dark, cold outer space.

11. Supernova

It holds up brilliantly, all these years later, thanks to the pleasing realistic effects and amazing camera work. It’s best seen in movie theaters, where the cold, dark corner of the wither space breaks down, and contrasts with the closed spaces inside the nostromo.

Sigourney’s Elley is the last girl and deserves all the praise, but the rest of the cast is fantastic. They don’t just wait.

You wonder why you follow each other, Aliens Not on this list? It’s just as good as the first movie, but it’s more of an action movie than a horror movie, so I left it off.
