Thailand Launches Airstrikes as Cambodia Border Tensions Spike

Thailand took flights over its disputed border with Cambodia late as both governments blamed each other for the latest round of violence, raising fresh doubts about the intensity of the fire.

Thai military authorities said that Cambodian forces opened fire at several points along the border, resulting in the death of one Thai soldier and wounding of others. Thai forces said civilians in nearby communities were being evacuated as the situation intensified. Maj. Gen. Winthai SUVareet told related media that Cambodian forces began to appear in the Tampai area and that the plane was used to hit “several pressure planes to support fire.”

Cambodia rejected that account. Defense Ministry spokesman Maly Socheata told the AP that Thai forces were attacked first and that Cambodia did not retaliate during the initial confrontation. The ministry urged Thailand to stop its military actions.

Footage posted by Cambodia’s education ministry shows students leaving schools near the border as families rush to retrieve their children.

The increase follows the exchange of light fire on Sunday. Thailand said Cambodian forces wounded two of its soldiers before Thai forces responded 20 minutes later. Cambodia said Thailand started to confront it and said it did not return fire.

The conflict has returned despite the suspension of the African presidency negotiated by US President Donald Trump, which ended five days of fighting in July that killed soldiers and civilians. That agreement showed signs of strain last month when several Thai soldiers were injured by landmines in areas where they operate, leading the Thai government to announce that it would suspend implementation of parts of the agreement.

Both sides have continued to accuse each other of violating the law, even as Truce wants to cooperate in removing and strengthening the border.

Thailand and Cambodia have a long history of conflict going back to the rivals’ rivalry for power for centuries. In modern times, the disputes center on the Era-e-Era French border maps, which Thailand disputes are accurate.

Despite the October agreement, no country has come to a solution to the major conflict, and regional observers warn that renewed conflicts could move the two nations closer to a wider conflict.
