Tate McCrae he did not expect all the criticism he received after working with it Morgan wallen.
“Honestly, country music is big where I’m from,” McCrae, 22, said Rolling Stone His cover story was published on Thursday, December 11 – It refers to his hometown of Calgary, Canada. “My brother has always loved country music with rabbis. I have always wanted, at some point in my life, to do folk or country music, and I will in the future.”
McCrae said when he was asked to be included in Wanden’s “what I’m looking for,” he thought it was a “cool” opportunity.
“But honestly I got a chance to do a country song, and I was like, ‘HH, this is cool.’ And I wanted to cross genres really bad,” he explained to the outlet. “It was about the song for me. I didn’t realize how much the song was connected to everything else, and it really surprised me.”
In May, May’s collaboration with Wallen, 32, on “What I Want” caused a backlash from her fans after she broke up. (Some of Wanden’s previous affairs include being suspended by his record label in February 2021 after a video surfaced of a sobioli on the roof of a Nashville bar in 2024.)
“Wow maybe avoid people like Morgan Wallen,” one employee wrote on Instagram of one of McCrae’s posts while another wrote, “what did I deserve, and you still do it all for me?”
While McCrae did not respond to the criticism at the time, he admitted on Thursday that he had never met Wallen in person – but did not regret “doing a duet with him.
“I don’t think you should regret living, because it gives you so much clarity,” she said Rolling Stone. “I think that debate and criticism is a way to learn and learn what you want to move forward, and how to do that as a person.”
While McCrae enjoyed their collaboration, Wallen once discussed how excited he was to feature MCrae on his song.
“My sister turned me on to Tate and his music a few years ago and I’ve been a fan ever since. He’s a true superstar, a top songwriter,” he said in an interview titled Slide in May. “We’ve known each other for a few years and were talking about doing a song together when that person came along.”
Although Wallen noted that “All I Want” wasn’t intended to be a duet, after “listening to it a few times,” he really thought the song had a strong feeling about it. “
Wellen recently made headlines last week when he appeared at the CMA Awards after receiving an end-of-the-year honor from Apple Music.
“I like my fans to do the talking,” Wanden wrote in an Instagram story on the side of the Apple Music screen announcing that his “most listened to” album is the “2025 project” of Music.
Wanden’s comments came after he missed out on entertainment of the year at the 2025 CCMA Awards last month. (Lainey Wilson he ended up taking home the prize.)
