Virginia Gov. – Elect Abigail Spanberger didn’t mince words when asked if Democrats in Congress should see her election – and the success of other Democrats on Tuesday – as permission to continue the government shutdown.
“Not really,” said Spanberger, “in front of the nation” on Sunday. “Our victory was based on a campaign that faced issues related to spending and turmoil throughout the last two years and it was based on hearing the challenges of all Virginians.”

He says: “It’s still the lobbying that comes out of Washington that affects Virginia the most,” he added.
Virginia is home to more than 147,000 public employees, most of whom were laid off as the government shutdown began. That’s the highest concentration of government employees in any country, according to records from the Library of Congress.
Spanberger emerged victorious last week along with other Democrats in New Jersey, New York City and the Democratic polls in California. After election night, some observers suggested the effects of civil unrest over the government shutdown — and the tacit alignment of the Democratic position on Gridlock.
Even President Donald Trump suggested that Republicans were being held down by the shutdown.
“Last night was not expected to be a victory,” Trump said after the election. “Very Democratic places. I don’t think it was good for the Republicans. I don’t think it was good for anybody. We had a good night.”

Republicans and Democrats remain at loggerheads over how to fund the government as the shutdown begins on Oct. 1 enters its 40 days. Republicans advanced a temporary spending bill that would have kept the lights on through November 21, but Democrats blocked those efforts 14 times.

Spanberger disagrees with that approach, saying lawmakers should focus on getting the government more than health concerns.

“Virginians want to see open government. My expectation is that we will see the congress, the Senate and ultimately the President driving us in that direction,” Spanberger said. “The government needs to open, and it needs to open quickly.”
He called on the President to use negotiations.
“We need the President to show leadership, to bring people together, to try to find whatever negotiation he needs to be able to enter into even after that,” Spanberger said.
