Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani heard boos from the Toronto Blue Jays faithful as he walked into the dugout at Rogers Center for Saturday night’s start, but he ended up making history.
Ohtani struck out Blue Jays Starting Pitcher Max Scherzer to start the game, which silenced the crowd for a second. He became the first National Series starting pitcher to record a hit while starting Game 7.

The last time a pitcher was recorded while starting game 7 in a national series was the 1975 series in which Cincinnati Reds Star Donlet and Boston Red Sox Starter Lee Hits.
If he gets the second hit, he will be the first rider to achieve that feat.
Scherzer set up and was able to sit down and retire Smith, Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts after one.
Ohtani made it to third but failed to score.

The Dodger star was also close to three days off as Los Angeles hopes to end Hollywood despite a unique rule that would prevent him from taking the bat and taking the mound in the same game.
MLB instituted a rule that if the first pitcher in a fight, he can continue to hit without the mound – a rule that allows Ohtani to stay in the game.
However, if Ohtani started this game as the team’s designated hitter and later entered relief, they would risk losing his powerful bat down the line in his exit as his pitcher.
The only way Ohtani can stay in the game after being used as a relief pitcher would be to play the field, something he hasn’t done very often in his career. The three-time MVP has pitched 8 1/3 innings in his career and hasn’t done so since 2021.

With all that in mind, Dodger manager Dave Roberts started Ohtani on the mound, making sure he could keep his bat in that game regardless of how long he pitched. It is not clear how deep Ophani will go in this game.
