Rob Reiner’s son, Nick, appeared in an LA court to face murder charges

Nick Reiner made his first appearance in a Los Angeles court Wednesday morning, nearly three days after allegedly murdering his parents – Hollywood sweethearts Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner – in their Brentwood home.

Flanked by his lawyer, Alan Jackson, and two other lawyers, Reiner was invisible in the courtroom during the brief hearing. He wore a blue suicide prevention vest that is often worn by defendants who may be at risk of harming themselves.

Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead from stab wounds in the master bedroom of their Brentwood home around 3:40 p.m. Sunday, authorities said. The couple was found by their daughter who came to the house after she was called by a body scrubber saying that her parents are not answering the door of their house.

About six hours later, Los Angeles police arrested Nick Reiner in Exposition Park near the USC campus. He was taken into custody without incident. It is unclear how authorities connected Nick Reiner to the murders.

A beloved director and comedian, Rob Reiner was known for his work in historical films including “When Harry Met Sally,” the adaptation of Stephen King’s “Stand By Me” and the mockumentary “This Is Spinal Tap.” The 78-year-old also had a guest role for several episodes on the latest season of “The Bear.” Rob and Michele met on the set of “When Harry Met Sally” and had three children together. Rob also has a daughter from his previous marriage.

Nick’s siblings, Jake Reiner and Romy Reiner, released their first public statement since their parents’ deaths on Wednesday.

Nick was the couple’s middle child, and his battle with addiction was long documented. Father and son worked together on a semi-autobiographical film about the situation titled “Being Charlie.”

Authorities have not released details about a possible motive for the crime. But family friends told The Times that Rob and Nick Reiner got into an argument at a holiday party at talk show host Conan O’Brien’s home on Saturday evening. Several party guests saw Nick acting strangely, friends said, but it’s unclear what they were arguing about.

Authorities declined to provide a specific timeline for the attack or describe the weapon Nick Reiner allegedly used. Nick, who was staying at his parents’ guest house, checked into the Pierside Santa Monica hotel on Sunday after the murder, according to a law enforcement source who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. The hotel staff also confirmed that he was staying there and that the police had been there since Sunday.
