Rep. Eli Crane, R-Ariz., will introduce a bill to award independent reporter Nick Shirley the Congressional Medal of Honor for his work exposing allegations of fraud involving members of the Somali community in Minnesota.

“I want to thank and thank the independent reporters Nick Shirley and Dave Hock, who came forward with this story,” Crane said at the Oversight Committee Hearing on Wednesday.

“I’m introducing a bill to award Nick Shirley a Congressional Medal of Honor for his groundbreaking work in exposing astronomy fraud in Minnesota.”

Shirley, a video journalist who posts her work on social media and YouTube, visited childcare, medical and welfare facilities in the North Star State in recent weeks, revealing dozens of providers who were bare bones and unemployed despite receiving millions in government funding.

Many of the programs turned Shirley away when she asked if she could sign up to receive services from them.

Although Shirley’s work covers only a handful of cases, he highlighted how the programs are looking down amid a congressional investigation into whether the state amassed mountains of losses as fraud.

According to a recent investigation, Minnesota could have lost as much as $9 billion to fraud like the one exposed by Shirley.

Crane said Shirley’s video revealed unique details about Minnesota’s lack of oversight and how easy it was to expose some of the apps.

“The reason I’m doing this is because the American people are sick and tired of this, and they’re sick and tired of the mainstream media not covering it,” Crane said.

Crane said the work started by Shirley must continue. In his view, it asked big questions.

“The big question that many Americans have is: can this work at the highest level with the governor and the attorney general – or are they involved?”
