New Delhi – Russian President Vladimir Putin was caught off guard by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks on Friday at the annual summit and agreed to reform economic relations, as the United States pressures India to review decades-old cooperation with Russia.

The Russia-India summit comes at an opportune time as the US is pushing for a Ukraine peace deal while seeking global cooperation. It will test Delhi’s new efforts to balance relations with Moscow and Washington as Almost four years of war in Ukraine grinding.

Putin was received by Modi at the airport in New Delhi on Thursday. The Indian leader gave Putin an Ab Hug and a firm handshake with the gusto of an old friend.

After the speeches, Putin and Modi announced that India and Russia have finalized a plan for economic cooperation until 2030, which will help various businesses to promote trade that takes place annually at $ 100 per year.

Combined trade between the two countries stood at $68.7 billion in the last fiscal year ended in March. Trade has been largely offset by Russia’s deep deficit in India, which it seeks to bridge.

“To achieve this important goal, a plan for the development of Russian-Indian economic cooperation until 2030 has been agreed,” Putin said. He said work was underway on India’s agreement to establish a free trade area with the Eurasian Economic Union, a Moscow-dominated economic integration of many ex-Soviet countries, adding that it would help boost trade.

“Russia is a reliable supplier of energy sources and everything needed for the development of India’s energy sector, Putin said. “We are ready to continue to ensure uninterrupted oil supply for India’s rapidly growing economy.”

Before the Summit talks, the Russian leader said that the two countries “have a very strong relationship when it comes to military cooperation.”

Modi, for his part, said that after the talks the two countries will work to end the free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union. He also announced that India will soon start issuing free electronic visas to Russian tourists and groups visiting the country.

The Indian leader said energy security is anchored in the long India-Russia tie, with nuclear cooperation spanning decades. He also added that such cooperation will continue, alongside cooperation in clean energy, ship building, fertilizers and labor mobility.

While India remains deeply cautious about Russia, critics say that Putin’s visit could damage relations with the European Union and the United States and could reduce negotiations for major trade deals between the two that sell to India.
