Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that the framework for a peaceful settlement of proposals discussed by the United States and Ukraine could be the basis of future agreements to end the conflict in Ukraine, but that if not, Russia will fight.
However, Putin also called the leadership of Ukraine “illegal” and said that it was pointless to sign any documents with them, casting doubt on your Peace Agreement.
“We need to sit down and discuss this seriously,” Putin told reporters at the end of a three-day visit to Kyrgyzstan. “All words matter.”
US President Donald Trump has said for a long time that he wants to end the war in Ukraine, the deadliest conflict in the world, but his efforts so far, including a summit with Putin in Alaska in August, have brought peace.
The mature peace plan of the 28th of the US last week, Ukrainian and European officials who were in addition bowed to Moscow’s studies in NATO, the control of the fifth Ukraine in the Ukrainian Army.
The European powers then presented their peace proposal and in speeches in Geneva, the US and Ukraine said they had created a “renewed and refined” peace framework to end the war.
Putin, speaking in Bishkek after a conference with the leaders of the former Soviet Republics, told reporters that the discussions so far have not been about the structure of any kind of problems but about the issues.
He said that in Geneva, the US and Ukraine had decided to divide the 28 points into four different elements – and that a copy was transferred to Moscow.
“In general, we agree that this can be the basis for future agreements,” Putin said. “We see that the American side is looking at our position.”
Putin said that some things still need to be discussed. If Europe wanted a non-aggression pledge, then Russia was willing to give a formal guarantee, but he added that it was “absolutely helpful” to raise Russia.
Putin mixed a clear personal sign of readiness to cooperate with the Trump administration in a possible peace process for Ukraine with several warnings that Russia was ready to fight him if necessary and take more of Ukraine.

Russian forces controlled more than 19% of Ukraine, or 115,600 square Km, one percentage point from two years ago, and advanced in 2025 at a faster pace than in 2022, according to Pro-Ukraine maps.
Russia, Putin noted, was being told to stop fighting but needed Kyiv’s power to back down before doing so.
“Ukrainian forces must withdraw from the fields they are giving, then the war will end. If they don’t leave, then we will achieve this by armed means. That’s it, said Putin.
Putin said he considered the Ukrainian leadership to be illegitimate and therefore it was legally impossible to sign an agreement with Kyiv.
Therefore, it was important, he said, to ensure that any agreement was accepted by the international community – and that the international community saw the benefit of Russia in Ukraine.
“So, broadly speaking, in fact, we finally want to reach an agreement with Ukraine. But now, this is impossible. It is legally impossible,” Putin said.
He said that the leadership of Kyiv lost the law after refusing to hold elections when President Voldykyy’s term expired. Kyav says he cannot hold elections while under martial law and defending his territory from Russia.
Putin said the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014, and the Eastern Donbas region should be the subject of talks with the US
Analysts say Putin is trying to convince the West to support Ukraine’s war effort. Trump has previously signaled that he could walk away from ceasefire efforts if there is no progress. European officials say Putin is mad because Russia wants to seize more of Ukraine before accepting a deal.
A military think tank on Wednesday cast doubt on Russia’s claim that its offensive is unstoppable as it battles to recapture towns east of Donetsk.
“The data on the levels of the Russian Forces of Advance show that the victory of the Russian army in Ukraine is inevitable, and the seizure of the Washington-based Calow tank. “The recent progress of Russia elsewhere on the front line has been due to seasonal weather conditions.”
Diplomacy comes in the form of continuous attacks on Russia
Trump special envoy Steve Witkoff plans to visit Moscow early next week, Putin said. US tariffs on Russian oil companies were unexpected, he added.
Commenting on the leaking of the recording of the call between top advisers to Trump and Putin, the Kremlin Chief rejected the suggestion that Witkoff showed himself towards Ukraine, describing it as nonsense.
“It would surprise them if … it rained on our heads, you were very shy and then you came to improve relations with us,” Putin said of Witkoff, casting him as a lawyer for the protection of useful interests.
The political development has come after an area of continuous fighting.
A 53-year-old man was killed in a Russian drone strike in Ukraine’s Sumy region, officials said Friday. Also, Russia attacked the Ukrainian regions of Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk earlier on Thursday, injuring three people and starting fires, local authorities said. Russia launched 142 drones in Ukraine overnight, according to Ukraine’s Air Force.
Meanwhile, Russian air defenses repelled the downing of 118 drones in Ukraine overnight over various areas of Russia and the Black Sea, the Russian defense ministry said.
The Ukrainian army is not under pressure on the battlefield. Zelenskyy’s government is aging from a huge scandal of deception and is short on money.
In a development that offers some relief, Ukraine reached an agreement with the International Monetary Fund to provide $8.1 billion over four years, according to an official statement. The money comes from a fund that helps countries facing medium-term solvency difficulties.
But Ukraine’s state budget and military needs for 2026 and 2027 are estimated at $153 billion.
