A touching video shows the moment a suspected shoplifter tried to shoot an Ohio police officer at point-blank range inside a Walmart – only to be stopped when his gun appeared to malfunction and a store security guard intervened.
A violent incident occurred Thursday in Canton after a man and a woman were arrested for allegedly shoplifting, according to reports.
The two were taken to the security room, where an officer could be seen questioning and searching the male suspect, identified as Shane Newman, 21, of FOX 8.
The video from the policeman’s body camera – which was placed on a table – initially showed a calm situation, with a Walmart employee handing the officer a pen and paper while the two suspects were sitting on a bench.

After a while, the situation exploded.
Newman suddenly turned around, pulled out a gun and tried to shoot the officer as the woman screamed, “No, no, no!” There was a clicking sound as Newman pulled the trigger.
A Walmart employee jumped on Newman to try to stop him, but Newman raised the gun again and tried to fire a second time and it went off again.
The employee then slammed the gun into Newman’s hands as the officer drew his weapon and yelled, “Get back! Get back!”
The officer then took control of the situation and put Newman on the ground until other officers arrived. Both suspects are in custody.
In body camera footage, the officer told responding officers that Newman “pulled out a gun, pointed it at my head and pulled the trigger,” but the weapon did not go off.

The officer said he pulled out his own weapon and was going to shoot Newman, but was afraid to hit the Walmart employee as the employee tried to take the suspect away. He also admitted that he lost the gun that was hidden in Newman’s shoulder bag during the search.
The officer said he had been notified seconds before the attack that Newman had a warrant for his arrest and was described as “armed and dangerous.”
Newman was charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault on a police officer, court records said.
The woman, identified as Katerina Jeffrey, has been charged with robbery and possession of a disabled weapon, FOX 8 reported.

Before the violence began, the officer asked Newman if he had anything on him as part of the search. Newman said all he had was a cell phone, then voluntarily surrendered a small container in his pocket that investigators said contained illegal drugs, according to FOX 8.

“Are we going to jail?” Jeffrey asked the policeman.
“Not unless something crazy happens,” replied the officer.
