OpenAI announces speed, quality improvements to ChatGPT image generator

OpenAI has announced an update to ChatGPT Images that it says significantly improves the production speed and instruction-following capabilities of its image generator.

A Tuesday blog post from the company says the update will make it much easier to make precise edits to AI-generated images. Previous iterations of the program have been difficult to follow and often make unsolicited changes.

“The update includes robust command-following, more precise editing, and up to 4x faster speed, making image creation and replication more efficient,” the company wrote.

“This marks the transition from a new image generation to more efficient, reliable visual creation – turning ChatGPT into a fast, flexible creative studio for everyday editing, graphic editing, and real-world use,” the post continued.

The announcement comes a few weeks after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman issued a “code red” memo to his company to improve the quality of ChatGPT.

In this document, Altman said that OpenAI has a lot of work to do in improving everyday knowledge of its chatbot, such as allowing it to answer a wider range of questions and improving its speed, reliability and personalization features for users, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The reported company-wide memo from Altman comes as rivals cut OpenAI’s lead in the AI ​​race, with Google last month releasing a new version of its Gemini model that outperformed OpenAI in industry benchmark tests.

To focus on the “red code” effort to develop ChatGPT, OpenAI will be deferring work to other programs, such as a personal assistant called Pulse, advertising and AI agents for health and shopping, Altman said in a memo, according to the Journal.

Altman also said the company will have a daily call between those responsible for improving ChatGPT, the newspaper said.

“Our focus now is to continue to make ChatGPT better, keep growing, and expand our global reach — while making it feel more intuitive and personal,” wrote Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, on X Monday night.

OpenAI is currently unprofitable and must raise funding to survive, compared to competitors like Google which can fund investments in their AI businesses with profits, the Journal reports.
