Penn State parted ways with head coach James Franklin Oct. 12, one day after raiding the northwest Nittany Lions.
Franklin has accepted a job at Virginia Tech, while Penn State continues to search for someone to fill its teaching position. Many reports have linked Brian Dagoll to Penn State. The New York Giants released Daboll from his coaching duties earlier this month after 3½ seasons.
During the conversation, football coach Nick Saban threw his support behind Daboll. Saban said Daboll would have been an “outstanding recruit” for Penn State.

Saban is familiar with Daboll’s training. Daboll worked under Saban when Daboll was Alabama’s offensive coordinator during its run to the 2017 college football championship.
Saban pointed to one successful year he ran with Daboll and highlighted Daboll’s other accomplishments as an assistant coach in the NFL.
“I love Brian. He’s done a great job here with us here. We’re an offensive coordinator, we’ve won a championship with him calling the plays. He’s been to the Super Bowl a couple of times with [Bill] Belichick won,” Saban said Wednesday during an appearance” on Pat Mcafee. “

Prior to the Giants head coaching opportunity, Daboll had assistant coaching stints with the New England Patriots, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills.
“I think he’s had a tough time with the Giants, but I think he’s a great coach. He’s a great guy. He’s a great person. He’s still a great employer.
“He communicates well with the players. He is a good teacher. He has a good bad mind. He will be able to put a good staff together.”

Earlier this month, The Athlete reported that Daboll was “believed to be interested” internally and was “expected to receive consideration” for the Penn State job.
The report added that Daboll received support from “some former NFL players with strong ties to Penn State.”
