Mount Semeru erupts in Indonesia, moving out

Indonesia’s Mount Chief, the highest on the island of Java, erupted on Wednesday, pelting many villages with falling ash, prompting evacuations and leading authorities to raise the highest level of warning.

Mount Semeru in East Java Province released pouring clouds of hot ash and a mixture of rock, lava and gas that traveled seven kilometers down its slopes in the tropics, the geology agency Indoy’s said in a statement.

Local media reported that authorities are fighting to rescue about 178 people trapped on the 3,676-meter Ranu Kumbolo Monitoring Post. This group includes 137 riders, 15 passengers, seven guides and six tourism officials, according to the Bromo-tengger Park (TNBTS) official.
