MIT develops glucose-free glucose using light technology

Managing diabetes already puts pressure on medications and long-term health risks. Regular glucose checks only add weight. Most people are tested with finger pricks or wearing a patch that needs a sensor under the skin. If you don’t like needles, this part can feel like the hardest work of the day.

Mit researchers are working on a new option. They created a device that shines a light close to your skin and reads your blood sugar without breaking the skin. It works with Raman Spectroscopy, a method that looks at how light shines when it hits the molecules in your tissue.

How a light-based scanner works

The current setup is about the size of the piece box. You rest your arm over the 30-Second scanner. A small beam shines through the glass windows on your skin. The light comes back with small shifts in wavelength that reveal which molecules are present.

Ramani’s previous systems have drawn on nearly 1,000 belts with many appearances. The MIT team found that they only needed three bands to calculate glucose levels. Since there are fewer processing signals, the device becomes smaller, faster and less expensive. This strengthens and improves the speed since the system no longer types with positive data.

In the four-hour study, the volunteer drank two sugary drinks while the researchers studied every five minutes. The new scanner matched the accuracy of two commercial glucometers worn by the participant. That result surprised the team because the device is still in early development.

Progress in dressing

After completing the box version of the pieces, mit engineers created a mobile size. That unit is now in clinical trials with healthy volunteers. A larger trial with people with diabetes is expected next year.

The long-term goal is more exciting. The researchers believe they can shrink the hardware to the size of the clock. They also want to ensure that the system accurately reads multiple skin tones. If these steps are successful, hand-based glucose measurements may be possible.

Whether this compares to other efforts does not

This light-based approach joins other ideas that try to move past needles. The latest chest strap used ECG signals to predict Glucose levels. It looked promising, but it still needs time before it reaches consumers.
