Argentina’s President Javier Milei has defended Sunday’s decisive midterm elections, extending his control of Congress and giving his new government the impetus to press ahead with deep cuts and free radical reforms.
The result gives Milei’s Lilei movement a boost and marks another sharp turn for Latin America’s largest economy.
Milei’s party, La Libertad Avanza, won about 41.5% of the vote in Buenos Aires Province, a historic upset in a region long controlled by the peronist opposition. The Rival Coalition took 40.8%, according to figures from Reuters and the Associated Press.

Nationally, La Libertad Avanza increased its seats in the lower house from 37 to 64, the position of Milei to easily protect his pockets and the high orders that defined his economic agenda.
“The result is better than the most optimistic supporters of Milei were hoping for,” Marcelo Garcia, director of the Americas in general risk engcuren, said in a comment reported by Reuters. “For this reason, Milei will be able to easily defend her policies and vetoes in Congress.”
Political consultant Gustavo Cordoba told Suruters The result showed a conscious optimism among voters who are willing to give more economic policies.

“Many people were willing to give the government another chance,” said Cordoba. “The victory cannot be denied, it cannot be denied.”
