Mexican Mayo shot, killed during Day of the Dead celebrations – nationwide

A mayor in Mexico was shot dead in a plaza in front of many people gathered for a day of the dead celebration, authorities said.

A city council member and a security guard were also injured in the attack on Saturday.
The person who shot Manzo Rodrííguez was killed at the scene, Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch said during a press conference on Sunday.
Manzo Rodríguez was shot seven times by an unknown man, said García Harfuch. The weapon used was linked to two armed conflicts between criminal gangs operating in the region, he added.
“No line of inquiry has been decided to clarify this war of cowards that took the life of the Mayor,” said García Harfuch.
“We express our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones and the residents of Uruapan, today they are facing the loss of pain and justice at the hands of organized crime,” García Harfuch added. “There will be no insecurity.”
Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, the governor of the state, said that Manzo Rodrí Rodríguez’s Offerant was working with two other suspects, who were arrested.
			
			
		
It is unclear how many people are believed to have been involved in the shooting. A motive is unknown at this time.
The attack on Manzo Rodríguez, a former legislator from Morena, was captured on video and shared on social media. The footage shows dozens of residents and tourists, some in costume and face paint, enjoying the day of the dead event surrounded by large candles, marigold flowers and skull decorations. Then several gunshots were fired, and people could be seen working under cover.
In one video, a man is said to be shown lying on the ground as an officer performs CPR while armed police patrol the area.
Manzo Rodríguez is the seventh mayor to be killed in Michoacán since 2022, the New York Times reports.
On Sunday, hundreds of citizens of Urupan took to the streets of the city to accompany the funeral and say goodbye to the murdered mayor.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum took to X on Sunday to condemn the “heinous killing” of Manzo Rodríguez.

“My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, as well as the people of Uruapan, for this untimely loss,” he wrote. “Since the event of this tomb became known, I spoke with the governor of Michoacán and the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, who has maintained regular contact with the state attorney.”
Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, a former ambassador to Mexico, said his thoughts are with the family and friends of Manzo Rodríguez.
“The US stands to deepen security cooperation with Mexico to eradicate organized crime on both sides of the border,” he said. “Here’s Carlos holding his young son in a celebration just before the attack. May his soul rest in peace and may his memory inspire and work effectively.”
Michoacán is one of Mexico’s most violent states and is a battleground between various cartels and criminal groups fighting for land control, drug distribution and other illegal activities.
Months ago, Manzo Rodrííguacez publicly appealed to Sheinbaum in the media community for help in dealing with cartels and criminal groups. The governor of the government of MicrocAacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, and the police of the State of corruption.
Manzo Rodríguez was under protection from December 2024, three months after taking office. His security was strengthened in May by the Metropolitan Police and the National Guard, said García Harfuch, without specifying what prompted the measure.
Manzo Rodríguez was often seen wearing a bulletproof vest and expressed fear for his safety.
