Police were ambushed by a 16-year-old high school student last week after an artificial intelligence (AI) system mistakenly identified his chip bag as a gun, leaving officials and students in shock.
Student Taki Allen was waiting for his ride to Kenwood High School in Essex, Maryland, last Monday when he put an empty bag in his pocket, according to WMAR-2 News. Moments later, the police suddenly swung around, threw him to the ground and made him handcuff him, a local station reported.
A body camera released by the Baltimore Police Department shows responding officers realizing that the AI security system, which mistakenly recognizes a chip bag as a gun, triggers a law enforcement response.
“The police showed up, like eight cars and police, then they all came out with guns pointed at me to talk about going into the ground. I was putting my hands up, ‘what’s going on?'” Allen told WMAR-2.

According to the video, police reviewed the video flagged by an AI system, tracked the object to a nearby trash can, and discovered that the weapon was a bag of chips.
“I think it’s just you guys eating chips with it… it took it like a gun,” the police told the students in the video. “AI is not all good.”
The incident of Oct. 20 we left students, city officials and school administrators asking who is responsible for the tragic incident.
During the call of the conference, Superintendent Dr. Myriam Rogers said the alert had been canceled, but the school’s principal had begun coordinating the police response.
“The notice was canceled by the BCPS (Baltimore County Public Schools) security team. The principal, who was unaware of the cancellation, contacted our school resource officer,” he said in a FCPS statement.

Ultimately, the program is working as intended, Roger told WMar-2.
“This program is based on the confirmation of a person and in this program it did what it should have done, it should have signed the warning and because people looked that they should be able to care about that moment,” said Rogers.
Omnilert told Fox News Digital their system combines both artificial intelligence with human verification before uploading.

“Our system worked as designed – it identified a potential threat, raised it to human review, and relied on FOX News Digital,” trusting that the item was confirmed not to be a firearm and the notification marked as resolved.
“From that point forward, Omnilert was no longer involved in any subsequent actions or decisions related to this event. “

Allen, shaken by the incident, said he no longer felt safe going outside after football practice and that the incident should not have happened.
“I don’t think any chip bag should be mistaken for a gun at all,“Allen told Wmar-2.
“I don’t – don’t think I’m safe enough to go out, especially if I’m eating a bag of chips or something to drink. I’m just staying inside until my trip,” Allen added.
