Late singer Donna Jean Godchaux-Mackay dies at 78 of cancer

Donna Jean Godchaux-Mackay, former singer of The Dead, has died at the age of 78, Fox News Digital confirmed.

Godchaux-Mackay passed away on November 2, surrounded by her family at Helive Hospice in Nashville after a long battle with cancer.

Godchaux-Mackay was born in Florence, Alabama. Throughout his career, he was the background vocalist on two No. 1 songs.

After leaving the band, Donna and Keith formed their own band, Heart of Gold, in 1980. In July 1980, Keith was involved in a car accident. He died a few days later at 32.

In 1981, Godchaux-Mackay married the musician David Mackay, and the two moved back to the muscle, Alabama – the same city Donna first started with music.

He was inducted into the rock & roll hall of fame in 1994 and went on to start his own band, the Jean Godchaux Band, in 2006.

Surviving are her husband, David Mackay; His son Kinsman Mackay, and his wife, Molly; his son Zion Godchaux and his son, Delta; sister, Gogi Clark; and his brother, Ivan Thatcher.
