Kenny Chesney and Grace PotterA relationship that has always been about friendship – and nothing else.
Chesney, 57, recalls getting Potter, 42, to collaborate on their 2010 hit “You and Tequila” in his memoir, Heart Life Musicpublished on Tuesday, November 4. He also admitted that the music video for the track presented an unrealistic view of their relationship together.
“We spent two days in Malibu, climbing the canyons, seeing watches and the beach, drinking tequila and talking about the video” you and tequila “. He told the students that Potter has a “real sense of fun” without being a musician.
“Anyone who has ever seen this video is assuming sexism,” Cesney wrote. “Even Mom thought we were sleeping together, but that wasn’t true. That chemistry comes from our gypsy souls, our desire to chase the music where we make it and disappear into the places we can.”
Chesney was approached by Potter before he recorded the song. He had listened to her album live and realized that they would go well with the music.
“I looked up at the sky and it was over,” Chesney wrote. “I knew we were matched. He sounded like he was coming home.”
When recording “you and tequila,” it only took Potter “two or three.” But that song allowed their friendship to blossom.
“We were talking longer than the beginning of the vocal booth. Even before the mix, we knew it was something,” he added. “That’s the thing: You know.”
Their song was featured on Chesney’s 2010 album, Hemingway’s whiskey.
“I’ve always believed that there are things in our lives that were predestined – placed by some higher power,” he wrote. “Grace was alone.”
He added: “That heart he brings to everything he does was the key to Skeleton in my world. Whenever he took a stage with us, people were moved.”
After their collaboration, Cesney’s friendship with the potter continued to grow stronger.
“Grace and I have shared our deepest secrets, talked about difficult things with each other and tried to show each other,” he wrote. “I told her things that I didn’t tell anyone else, because instead of them judging or saying, ‘How did you let that go?’ He asks, ‘How can I help?’ “
He added, “It’s a very demanding trick on the people you love. You don’t want to tell them what to do or where to go.”
Chesney recalled worrying that Potter was “making a mistake” by marrying her ex-husband, Matt Burr. (Potter and Burr were married from 2013 to 2017.)
“I saw two great people who weren’t meant to be together forever,” he added. “I couldn’t tell her exactly, but Grace swears that she also knew without me to say a word. We drank a few bottles of good red wine, it was rager, I saw the sun.”
Chesney wrote, “He always tells how generous I am. I think that’s what you do to the people you love.”
