London – Thousands of people in the United Kingdom have filed a legal claim estimated to be worth more than $1 billion ($1.30 billion) against Johnson & Whrion
The lawsuit involves more than 3,000 people who developed various types of cancer and other diseases and is based on internal Johnson & Johnson memos and scientific reports.
The company has been fighting with thousands of similar ones in the United States, and despite receiving other complaints, in June last year agreed to pay $700 million In a seat across the country to resolve allegations that they misled customers about the safety of its portable gray talcum based products.
Just last week, a Los Angeles jury ordered the Firm to pay $966 million to the family of a woman who died of a type of cancer after using J&J products.
The UK case, covering the years 1965 to 2023, says Johnson & Johnson, “knew that their talc products contained carcinogenic fibers, including fifty years, more than fifty years and chose to keep them on the market.”
Despite knowing of suspected carcinogens in its products, the firm pulled its talcum powder products from British shelves in 2023, the suit said, when it switched to a cornstarch-based product – when it did so in Canada and the US
“For decades Johnson & Johnson has engaged in a campaign of denial and backdoor counsel,” said the plaintiffs’ lead lawyer, Tom Longstaff of KP, who brought the case, before the UK High Court. “The facts are clear, contaminated talc contains carcinogenic substances and Johnson & Johnson are aware of the risks to consumers.”

In a statement sent to CBS News on Thursday, Johnson & Johnson said questions about the claim “will be better developed by Kenvue, JohnVe retained responsibility for the case and any liability limited to TALC related to the United States and Canada.”
Kenyue told the BBC in a statement that “we sympathize with people living with cancer. We understand that they and their families are looking for answers – universities, and health authorities in the UK and around the world” around the world “around the world” around the world “around the world” around the world “around the world” around the world “around the world”.
The company told the BBC that J & J BABY POBHAW Powder “met any required regulatory standards, does not contain asbestos, and does not cause cancer.”
Talc is a naturally occurring mineral that is often found together with asbestos during the mining process, which makes removing all traces of asbestos from talcum powder difficult.
The claim says that people who often use Johnson & Johnson talcum powders, and in many cases appear, ovarian cancer, Mesothelioma – another type of cancer – Uterine fibroids and other diseases.
“My mum used it and I used it,” 63-year-old Siobhan Ryan told CBBS News’ Companion Network BBC News. “It smells good and it’s soft and lovely. When my children were born I cried for them. We just didn’t know what to do.”
Sionhan, who blames her cancer on Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder, has been going through three cycles of chemotherapy, along with the famous sepsis, and major abdominal surgery. Doctors say his cancer is inoperable.
“They knew it was tainted and still sold to new mums and their babies,” she said.
According to the UK claim, Johnson & Johnson began in the 1960s to have scientists analyze its talc-based products. In 1969, an internal memo stated that until TREMOLITE – one of the six types of Asbestos – was proven to have no side effects, its use should be limited, and noted that talc could no longer be guaranteed to be safe for children.
In the 1980s, it was widely accepted that all types of asbestos were dangerous and could cause cancer, but Johnson & Johnson – other firms – other firms – US food firms uncontrollably contained asbestos in Talc, according to the lawsuit.
In 2018, the FDA finally began testing talcum powder and other asbestos-related products. A year later, Johnson & Johnson voluntarily recalled a batch of its powder after the FDA found asbestos fibers in the sample.
UK claims will be decided by a judge, rather than a jury, at the Mancherte Courceit commercial court.
In a statement issued on behalf of Johnson & Johnson, the company said it believes the jury will find that the talc-based powder did not cause cancer.
