“I think Paul didn’t give him a chance the way he raised him,” Berchtold said We. “It breaks my heart. But that being said, you don’t want to discuss anything but you want to try and understand. All I’ve been trying to do is try to understand.”

Before his murder, Paul was subject to criminal liability for the wrongful death of his friend Mallory Beach following a boat accident.

“We meet him and he’s on a special level. He’s a team animal at that point in his life and he’s raised outside of the Murdaugh family, which is a lot less pressure. “Then this happens and you see the consequences of his actions – the painful consequences. He defends himself and we are very afraid that he can play the pieces. But then we are afraid that I can eat it.

Berchtold noted that filming the show changed his perspective on true crime, adding, “as an actor, you want to feel empathy in that moment and I thought about how I see people when we don’t want to see them as people.”
