Joe Lacob’s email to frustrated Warriors fan goes viral after loss

Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob’s brief email interaction with a fan has now gone viral after it was made public following Sunday night’s 136-131 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

As a result, Warriors coach Steve Kerr was asked about Lacob’s email exchange with fan Justin Dutari, which he didn’t see as a big deal.

“It’s not a big deal,” Kerr told reporters about the email exchange, via ESPN. “I don’t care about anything like that.”

Dutari sent an email to Lacob criticizing the Warriors’ play, saying the team needed a “real second option,” while he believed “veteran All-Star Jimmy Butler’s tools” were being underutilized.

“I am very disappointed,” Dutari’s email concluded, via ESPN.

It’s not uncommon for fans to express their frustrations with teams to the owner, but usually it doesn’t require a response. This time, it happened, as Dutari posted the interaction on Reddit, and the Warriors later confirmed that it was Lacob who responded.

“You can’t be as frustrated as I am. I’m working on it. It’s complicated,” Lacob replied in an email. “The style of play. The coaches [sic] wishes about the players. League styles. Jimmy is not the problem.”

Based on Lacob’s response, Kerr would be asked about it given the “coaches’ wishes about players” part of it.

But Kerr is clearly sweeping this one under the rug and continues to focus on the team.

The Warriors are 13-14 entering Tuesday, which puts them in eighth place in the Western Conference. Kerr is also in the final year of his contract, and announced before the season that he did not want a contract extension. He wanted to see how the season plays out before talking about his future with the team.

Kerr’s tenure with the Warriors has led to four NBA Finals victories since the 2014-15 season, although the team has not advanced past the Western Conference Semifinals since winning it all in 2022.

Kerr has been solid in running his team’s offensive game alongside Steph Curry and Draymond Green, given their chemistry together. However, some argue that there should be a change considering the smaller pieces on the list.

“We’re all devastated,” Kerr added. “Joe is frustrated. I’m frustrated. Steph too [Green]everyone is frustrated. This is the way the league works. I hate when people will send private emails. Imagine if everyone’s emails were already posted publicly, how difficult it would be to live our lives.”

Lacob and GM Mike Dunleavy continue to support Kerr despite the current results this season, and Curry has also expressed a desire for Kerr to stay with the staff this year.
