Throughout his 40-year career, Eddie Murphy has never been a fan of the glitz and glamor of Hollywood.
Ahead of the release of the latest Netflix book, “Being Eddie” – where he opens with his fame, he explains how he was able to escape home with a Hollywood award – why he takes time to get the award and the “deception” of people.
“This is one of the reasons why I don’t go to shows and emotions, the feeling of being in a room full of famous people who all want to achieve something, that feeling is the feeling,” he told USA Today. “Everybody’s dressed up and pretending … Being in a room full of famous people is just weird – I don’t like it.”

“I’ve always liked to hang around the house,” Murphy continued. “People I know who are comedians … do it because they love it. They love it. They get something out of getting that stage and feeling empowered and everything, and I’m the exact opposite.”
“My batteries are rebuilt in a state of peace when I’m at home, or I’m somewhere where everything can slow down, that’s where I give energy,” he added where I get energy, “add where I get energy,” he added where I go. “The crowd drains my energy.”
Throughout his career, he plays every role under the sun – he is an elderly woman “Professor Nutty,” a donkey who talks about animals “Dr. Doolittle,” a Jewish man in America “and many more. From helping a variety of jokes in today’s society to reveal the path of leading black actors in Hollywood, they have undoubtedly dedicated their lives to show business and the silver screen.
However, he never won an Oscar.

Murphy, who started his career as a stand-up comedian when he was 15, found his breakthrough spot on “Saturday Night Live” in the 1980s. Over the next few years, he landed leading roles in various films including “Beverly Hills Cop,” “boomerang,” “coming to America at night,” “coming to America” and more.

Murphy, who had achieved mega success in the late 80s and late 90s, was on his way to becoming one of the greats.

“I wanted to be funny like Richard [Pryor]. I wanted to be as cool as elvis [Presley]. And I wanted to be as big as the Beatles,” the caption said.
Reginald Hudlin, the film’s producer and director, said Murphy had a career.
“One of the quiet adages that Eddie has is, ‘HEY, black people have never had a movie like that. There had never been a dark romantic comedy before.

“Because we showed black life in a way that had never been put on screen before, there was this extreme majesty,” Hudlin said. “Hollywood back then and today. There are a lot of negative events. The dark stars of the movie were always breaking all these barriers, but those barriers were automatic.”

When he presented the award during the 67th annual awards in 1995, Murphy called out the Academy for failing to recognize black talent.

“When they came to me, and said they wanted me to present this award with a good picture, my manager came to me and told me that the school had chosen me,” Murphy told the crowd. “My first reaction was, ‘No, I’m not going.’ And my boss said, ‘Why?’ And I said, ‘I’m not going because they haven’t seen black people in the movies.’ And he said, ‘What are you talking about? Black people win Oscars.’ “
“I’m not going to win an Oscar for saying this, but hey, that’s Hey,” he said. “Actually I could be in any trouble because the way it’s been going, about every 20 years we’ve had one, so it’s not 2004 yet.
“I just want you to know that I’m going to give this award, but black people are not going to ride in the public caboose, and we’re not going to add it again. ‘ They said, ‘Fine, it’s done.’ I said, ‘When should I be there?’ He said, ‘Well, you don’t have to get there until nine or 10 years. It’s the last prize of the evening.’ “

Murphy said his comments could be the reason he was never given an Oscar.
“The next day, it was like I didn’t say anything,” Murphy recalled in the transcript. “There were no pictures of me at the OSCARS. There was no nomination for me. It didn’t mean I didn’t get an Oscar, man. I got everything.”
“I did everything, and I never got an Oscar, but I don’t think it’s because of that,” added Murphy, with a smirk.
At the end of the day, though, Murphy’s main focus is elsewhere.
“Someone asked me once about movies, my legacy. My legacy? My legacy is my children. If you put your children first, you will never make a bad decision.”
“I think I’m in a bit of a rut as an analyst,” said the historian. “I feel like there are other things I want to do, and I don’t want to do the things I’ve done before, and I want to do different kinds of movies and explore where I’ve been in the last few years between marriage and children and personal life.”
Murphy is a father to ten children from various relationships. He and his wife, Paige Bell, married in 2024 and share two children together.
“My children are the center of everything,” she said. “Before kids, it’s about you, and when you have kids, it’s all about that.”

“I’ve been on and off for two days, sometimes before I go to bed,” he continued. “When I met Paige, I got a lot out of her show. Now we watched two episodes of ‘Seinfeld’ straight after that. Go to bed.”
“Someone asked me once about movies, my legacy. My legacy? My legacy is my children,” he added. “If you put your children first, you will never make a bad decision.”
Murphy said he was grateful for his career in defiance and realized his Hollywood success was rare.
“My biggest blessing is not my good talent. My biggest blessing is that I love myself and I knew what I really wanted to do, very early in the morning,” she said. “That’s why I didn’t fall into any traps or anything because, at the root of it all, I love myself.”
