Israel strikes Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, 13 killed: Officials – National

An Israeli airstrike on a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon on Tuesday killed 13 people and wounded several others, civil servants and government officials said. It was the deadliest strike in Lebanon since it ended the Israel-Hezbollah war last year.

A drone strike hit a car in the parking lot of a mosque in the El-Hilweh refugee camp on the outskirts of the coastal city of Sidon, the State News Agency said. Lebanon’s Ministry of Health said 13 people were killed and several others injured in the airstrike, without giving further details.

Hamas fighters in the area prevented journalists from reaching the scene, as ambulances rushed to evacuate the wounded and dead.

The Israeli military said it attacked the Hamas Training Compound that was used to prepare for attacks on Israel and its army. It added that Israeli forces will continue to fight Hamas wherever the group operates.

Hamas condemned the attack in a statement saying the strike hit a sports venue and denying it was a training ground.

Saleh Arouri, the Deputy Political Head of Hamas and founder of the group’s military wing, was killed in a drone strike in the Southern section of Beirut on Jan. 2, 2024. Some Hamas police were killed there.

Hamas led Oct. 7, 2023 Attack in Southern Israel Kills About 1,200 People. That sparked an Israeli crackdown on the Gaza Strip that killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Service.

A day after Israel’s war began, Hezbollah began firing rocks at Israeli posts along the border. Israel responded with strikes and airstrikes in Lebanon, and the two sides were locked in an escalating conflict that escalated into full-scale war by late September 2024.

That war, the latest of several conflicts involving Hezbollah over the past four decades, has killed more than 4,000 people in Lebanon, including hundreds of civilians, according to the World Bank. In Israel, 127 people died, including 80 soldiers.

The war ended in late November 2024 with a US commercial fire. Since then, Israel has conducted dozens of airstrikes in Lebanon, saying Hezbollah is trying to build up its capabilities.

The Lebanese Ministry of Health has reported more than 270 people killed and about 850 injured by the actions of the Israeli army since the cessation of fire.
