Gacy was a serial killer and criminal who raped, tortured and murdered dozens of young men and boys. After being found guilty, he was sentenced to death and literally died in 1994.

Macmanus added: “It’s a decision of when to show [violence] or when not shown it was very easy. We didn’t show it and so we knew there would be times when we would get to the line. We would not dishonor the memory of the victims by re-enacting their last violent moments on this earth. So I hope that at the end of the day – as disturbing as it may be – that people realize that we finally honor the victims by not showing their final victims. “
