How to set up digital accounts for family emergency access after death

This is not a happy topic. But it’s valuable advice whether you’re 30 or 90.

If something happened to you tomorrow, would your family get into your digital life? I’m talking about your bank accounts, emails, crypto and a lifetime of memories stored on your phone or computer.

Big Tech and other companies won’t give out your data or passwords, even to a spouse, without hassle, if at all.

1. 10 minute setup

Start by contacting him through Inheritance. Think of someone you trust that you only get access to after you’re gone. Who is that? Good.

· iPhone: Open Settings > touch [Your Name]. Tap Login and Security > Inheritance Contact. Go to Add an Inherited Contact and follow the instructions.

· Google: Search Inactive Account Manager in your Google Account settings. Choose how long Google should wait before taking action (eg, three months). Add up to 10 people to be notified, and choose which data (Photos, Drive, Gmail) they can download.

2. The main main problem

Apple and Google do not support banking, insurance, investment or other sites or applications. You need a strong password manager like NordPass that offers emergency access features.

1. Open your Password Manager and look Emergency Access.

2. Add a Digital Heir: Enter the email address of a trusted spouse or child.

3. Set Security Delay: Choose a waiting time, usually 7 days nice place.

4. How does this work: When a contact requests access, the app sends you an alert. If you’re good, you hit Refuse. But if you’re disabled and can’t respond within those seven days, the vault opens automatically.

Pro tip: The Emergency Contact receives view-only privileges. They cannot remove or change anything in your vault.

3. Crypto & social media

· Crypto: Without your seed sentences, that money is gone. Keep them physically and any crypto purchase orders and receipts in your estate papers. If you use a crypto hardware wallet, store that in a safe fireproof place.

· Social media: On Facebook or Instagram, go to Settings > Commemoration. Choose to have your account deleted or managed by a contact who can send the final payment.

Make sure someone knows the passcode on your phone. That’s important for 2FA codes, among other things.
