Houston Democrats Menefoee and Edward Head to February Runuff

The race to replace a late Democratic Rep. Sylvester Turner in Texas’ 18th Congressional District went to a runoff election between Democrat Christian Menefee and Amanda Edwards.

The convention center, which covers some of the most densely populated parts of Houston, has been empty since the sudden death of March 5.

A democratic slogan, there were 16 candidates in the race, seven Democrats, five Republicans, three independents and a green party candidate.

Menefoer, an attorney and member of the Houston City Council, won 32% of the vote as of late Tuesday night and Edwards, who is running at 26%. Because no home candidate gets 50% of the vote to win the seat, he will have to face a runoff election in February.

Due to the passage of Texas’ Mid-Mee District Bill, the district will be divided into districts 9, 29 and 18. However, this change will not take place until March and will not affect the runoff election.

Although both candidates are vocal critics of President Donald Trump, Menefeee has been endorsed by the Caucus’s Political Caucus Committee. He has been praised by the reps. Pramila Jayapal, D-CASH.

In a joint statement, the three are called “proven watchmen” against “excessive Republicans” and Texas Gov. Greg abbott, attorney Ken Paxton and the Trump Administration.

Menzieeee also tweeted campaign ads about being called a “favorite lawyer” by the Trump White House.

Edward, meanwhile, is allowed by groups like Emily’s list and chooses women democratically.

Edwards’ campaign website emphasizes building a healthy, safe and equal region 18.

He says that “under the leadership of President Trump, our country has seen a devastating attack on our mountain, that separates us from weakness and other families and policies that hurt us.”

Curner died at the age of 70, having served in Congress for only a few months. He also served as the Mayor of Houston for eight years, from 2016 to 2024. He took the position of Democratic Rep.
