Hong Kong Fire Survivor recounts the last call that destroys a 40-year-old fire

Hong Kong – Yip Ka-Kui told CBB news that he was about to take the place when his wife called him from another room to talk about the fire that was rising where their son lives.

“I was very scared. I found my clothes, I came downstairs,” she said.

He never thought that the burning of the buildings of Wang Fuk’s apartment in Hong Kong would be Spread very quickly. “I went outside and saw a big fire,” he told CBS News on Monday, as it was officially declared dead from the fire he rode up to 150. “The fire was spreading everywhere, and I heard an explosion. The fire spread to another block. Mesh is even holding a vote.”

That the other block was his building, where he knew his wife was in the upper class. He watched as the fire grew from side to side, quickly blocking the large living space.

“I called my wife immediately and said it’s a big fire and we have to leave now,” he recalled through tears. “I told my wife, she went down.”

He was hopeful that firefighters would be able to get the blaze under control before it was too late.

On the other end of the phone, his worried wife, Bai Shui Lin, told him that she couldn’t walk through the black smoke.

“And there’s a lot of noise,” she said. “I won’t hear him again… It’s the only sound. And then I can’t contact him anymore. That’s the last call I had with him.”

“I kept waiting, hoping that the fire would be removed. I thought maybe only the outside would be affected. But the fire kept getting worse,” said the fire.

Since the swelling is distributed in seven buildings in this story, Yip watching behind the police cordon for any sign of his wife was made, but he did not see her.

He said he looked over the lists of pictures and names of the victims of the day as the number of deaths was entered, giving an explanation to the hospitals nearby and the hope that he had been saved.

“I couldn’t find my wife,” he said through tears. “I tried everything.”

Five days later, police confirmed his worst fears in a phone call on Monday. Bai, his wife of 40 years, has never left the building.

The couple’s two sons had to confirm his identification, but his remains were so badly burned that authorities used an ID card found in his bag to confirm that it was Him.

Yip said he went through the house, alerting neighbors of the fire that had spread to their building and said he helped at least three other families get out before it was too late.

Both of their sons survived the catastrophic fire, but YIP said he is responsible for the death of his wife.

“If I had asked him to leave a minute earlier, I think he would have survived,” she said. “But we know him. He wouldn’t be left without warning others.”

Hong Kong authorities said at least 30 people were missing on Monday, and rescue teams were still scouring seven Hong Kong buildings for victims who failed to escape.

At least 14 people have been arrested for the murder of a suspected person, as details of an apparent safety violation involving materials outside the building continue to emerge. Authorities have not made any further arrests.
