Former NFL Star Doug Martin has died while in a police custody in Oakland

The death of the former All-Pro Running Back Martin during a reported home break early Saturday will be investigated by various agencies in accordance with state law, the Oakland Police Department said.

Martin, 36, died at the hospital after becoming unresponsive after being arrested by Oakland police who responded to reports of a break in at the Oakland Zoo exit.

A statement issued by the Political Department said that the case will be investigated by the Department of Hospitals and Internal Affairs in addition to the Oakland City Police Commission, the Alameda County District Attorney’s office and the Alameda County District Attorney’s office and the Alameda County District Attorney’s office and the Alameda County District Attorney’s office.

“The Oakland Police Department remains committed to transparency. However, to ensure the integrity of the investigation, the release of information must be limited at this time,” the statement said. “Additional details will be shared as soon as the investigative process allows and in accordance with the law.”

Federal law requires law enforcement agencies to report any case where someone dies in their custody to the attorney general within 10 days.

The police department received near-simultaneous reports of a paramedic and a person “experiencing a medical emergency” in the same area, Oakland police told KTVU-TV.

“When he arrived, the officers found the person inside the house,” said the Department. “While I was trying to arrest the person, a short struggle ensued. After being arrested, the person became unresponsive.”

The officials involved have been placed on administrative leave.

However, he was suspended for four games in December 2016 for violating the NFL Repection Poscy policy. He went into rehab after testing positive for adderall and didn’t get $15 million in guaranteed money.

Martin left the game in 2017 – his final season in Tampa Bay – due to a concussion sustained during the Buccaneers’ season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. However, he returned with the ball seven times before being substituted late on. Martin sat out the next game and played sparingly for the rest of the season.

Martin, who was born in Oakland and attended high school in Stockton, signed a one-year deal in 2018 with the Raiders and rushed for 723 yards before going down with an injury.

Martin’s family released a statement on Sunday about his death.

“It’s very sad to hear what Doug Martin said Saturday morning,” his family said. “The cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”

The Buccaneers sent a tribute to Martin on social media: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected selection of a rookie during his six seasons as a Buccaneer, Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.”
