New York City Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani on Sunday released a video outlining the rights of New Yorkers during our immigration and enforcing that her administration will protect immigrant communities while protecting the city’s constitutional right to protest.
The video comes as immigration enforcement in New York faces a new face, emphasizing how Mamdani plans to confront the actions of the state that he says threaten the communities that present him and demand that they sell young people, inform and be confident in asserting their legal rights.
In the video, Mamdani opens by recalling the Ice RAID last weekend in Manhattan that sought to detain immigrants.
“As Mayor, I will protect the rights of all New Yorkers, and that includes the more than three million immigrants who call this city their home,” she said. “But we can all handle the snow if you know your rights.”

He then offers guidance to potential beneficiaries who may encounter snow.
“First of all, snow cannot enter private spaces such as your home, school or the private area of your workplace without judicial permission signed by a judge,” advised Mamdani. “If the ice does not have a judgment deward signed by a judge, you have the right to say, ‘I refuse to enter’ and the right to keep your door closed. ‘”
He pointed out that snow can bring documents that the documents say have the authority to arrest, but he said “that is a lie.”

“Snow is allowed by law to lie to you, but you have the right to remain silent,” said the Mayor-elect. “If you get arrested, you can always ask, ‘Am I free to go?’ over and over again until they answer you. “
Mamdani also said that people are “legally allowed to use Ice” as long as they do not interfere with arrest.
“It is important to remain calm with any interaction with ice or law enforcement. Do not interfere with their investigation, refuse to be arrested or run,” he said.

Mamdani closed by emphasizing the new constitutional right of New Yorkers to protest.
“New Yorkers have a constitutional right to protest, and when I’m Mayor, we will protect that right,” he said. “New York will always welcome immigrants, and I will fight every day to protect, support and celebrate our immigrant brothers and sisters.”
The video comes more than two weeks after the Mayor-Elect met with President Donald Trump, appearing to forge a new path in their relationship as they find common ground on new issues.
Despite that meeting, Mamdani affirmed New York’s status as a sanctuary city during a speech at a church in the Bronx.

“I share with the President directly that New Yorkers want to follow the laws of our city, and our city laws say, in the heart of our holy city, that the city government can communicate with the federal government at a higher level,” Mamdani said last month. “The concern comes from beyond those cases, New Yorkers who are arrested, arrested, deported for the crime of making a regular court appearance.”
“My focus as the next mayor of this city is to protect the immigrants who call this city their home,” said the Mayor-elect.
