Ethiopia’s volcano erupts after being dormant for 12,000 years – nationally

A volcano in Ethiopia erupted for the first time in nearly 12,000 years, sending plumes of smoke 14 kilometers into the sky and over the Red Sea.

Satellite images captured by NASA show the region in Ethiopia, where the Hayli Gubbi Volcano is located, with a brownish plume of smoke hanging over the area after Sunday.

Local authorities shared photos and videos of the ash plume rising from the Volcano.

According to the Guardian, Mohammed Seid, a local official, said no one was injured but warned that the eruption could have negative economic consequences for farming communities, adding that there is no past history of the volcano.

“Although no human lives and livestock have been lost so far, many villages have been covered in ash and as a result, their animals have little to eat,” he said.

As of Monday afternoon, the smoke from the volcano was heading toward China, according to the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Center.

The remote region is prone to earthquakes, Ahmed Ahmed Abdela told the Associated Press. He said he heard a loud noise and described what he called a shock wave.

“It sounded like a surprise bomb had been thrown with smoke and ash.”

A village near the Danakil desert, which attracts tourists, was covered in ash on Monday, and tourists and desert guides were attacked in the village, according to Abela.
